The First Epistle of John
This is as simple as the message of God gets. I John 5: 12 He that hath the Son Hath Life and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.

I John 1:1-3 1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life; 2 (For the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and shew unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us;) 3 That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ. In other words, John heard the words of Christ, saw Christ, touch Christ, and realized that he was the Word of Life. The reason for this writing was to share with us ( who did not hear, see, or touch Christ) is that we may have fellowship with the Father and the Son

I John 1: 4-7 . 4 And these things write we unto you, that your joy may be full. 5 This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. 6 If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth: 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanest us from all sin. John declares that God’s nature is light. The theme of light and darkness continues though out the entire book of I John. If you abide in him you are in the light, if not you abide in darkness. By walking in the light we have fellowship with God, and the blood of Christ cleanse us from our sins. Key here is the word blood.

Walking in the Light. Galatians 5:22
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

Walking in the Dark Galatians 5:19-21
Now the works of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity, depravity, idolatry, sorcery, hostilities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish rivalries, dissensions, factions, envying, murder, drunkenness, carousing, and similar things.

I John 1:8-10 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just, and will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us

Foot washing Key points We have been cleanse
In John 13:10 Christ states: He that has bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean; and you are clean, but not all of you. This brings out four points of interest with verses 8-10 of I John. Key points We have been cleanse We do get our feet dirty as we walk through this world. We must confess our sins and have our feet washed and cleanse. And that there is some in the church that have not the His word in him (Judas was the example here).

Fulfilling the law of Christ
Galatians 6:1-2 Brethren, even if a man is caught in any trespass, you who are spiritual , restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness; each one looking to yourself, lest you too be tempted. Bear one another’s burdens, and thus fulfill the law of Christ. This is the part of foot washing that Christ speaks of in John 13:14, 15 If I then, the Lord and the Teacher, washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I gave you an example that you also should do as I did to you.

Sin Psalm 51 is the prefect illustration of this of this cleansing of sin. In verse five David states that he had the sinful nature in him at birth. In verse ten David ask God to create a clean heart within him, and renew a right spirit within him. The key lies in verse seventeen; a broken and a contrite heart. This sin of David opened his eyes to his our sinful nature. He covered each sinful act with another. This sinful nature of man tries to take care of the problems in his own life. However, the sinful nature will use other sinful acts to cover the pass sinful acts. Only with true repentance can God clean up our problems. But even as in David’s life sin leaves a scar.

A righteous man can accomplish much
James 5:16 Therefore, confess your sins to one another, and prayer for one another, so that you may be healed. The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much.

I John 2:1-2 1 My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: 2 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for our's only, but also for the sins of the whole world.

I John 2: 3-6 3 And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments. 4 He that saith, I know him, and not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 5 But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him. 6 He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.

God’s Commandments His commandments can be found in Matthew 22:35-40: Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all your heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as Thyself. On these two commandments hang the law and the prophets.

I John 2:7-8 7 Brethren, I write no new commandment unto you, but an old commandment which ye had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which ye have heard from the beginning. 8 Again, a new commandment I write unto you, which thing is true in him and in you: because the darkness is past, and the true light now shineth.

I John 2:9-11 7 Brethren, I write no new commandment unto you, but an old commandment which ye had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which ye have heard from the beginning. 8 Again, a new commandment I write unto you, which thing is true in him and in you: because the darkness is past, and the true light now shineth.

I John 2:12-14 I am writing to you, little children, because your sins are forgiven for his sake. I am writing to you, fathers, because you know him who is from the beginning. I am writing to you, young men, because you have overcome the evil one. I write to you, children, because you know the Father. I write to you, fathers, because you know him who is from the beginning. I write to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God abides in you, and you have overcome the evil one.

Love not the world which is this:
A new commandment Children Fathers Young Man Sins are forgiven Know the Father Known Him Known him Overcome the evil one Strong Gods word abides in you Love not the world which is this: 1 lust of the eyes 2. Lust if the flesh 3. Pride of life.

Forgiveness of Our Sins
Isaiah 53:11 He shall see of the travail of his soul and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many: for he shall bear their iniquities.

I John 2:15-17 15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If any one loves the world, love for the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the pride of life, is not of the Father but is of the world. 17 And the world passes away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides for ever.

I John 2:18-19 18 Children, it is the last hour; and as you have heard that antichrist is coming, so now many antichrists have come; therefore we know that it is the last hour. 19 They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us; but they went out, that it might be plain that they all are not of us.

I John 2:20-23 20 But you have been anointed by the Holy One, and you all know. 21 I write to you, not because you do not know the truth, but because you know it, and know that no lie is of the truth. 22 Who is the liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, he who denies the Father and the Son. 23 No one who denies the Son has the Father. He who confesses the Son has the Father also.

I John 2:24,25 24 Let what you heard from the beginning abide in you. If what you heard from the beginning abides in you, then you will abide in the Son and in the Father. 25 And this is what he has promised us, eternal life.

I John 2:26,27 26 I write this to you about those who would deceive you; 27 but the anointing which you received from him abides in you, and you have no need that any one should teach you; as his anointing teaches you about everything, and is true, and is no lie, just as it has taught you, abide in him.

I John 2:28.29 28 And now, little children, abide in him, so that when he appears we may have confidence and not shrink from him in shame at his coming. 29 If you know that he is righteous, you may be sure that every one who does right is born of him.

I John 3:1 1 Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.

I John 3:2,3 2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. 3 And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure. This hope is the armour against the world and the flesh. .

The Love of the Father In these verses we learn four great truths: the love of the Father, our being called the sons of God, not being known by the world, and the hope that purifies us. The love of God can never be fathom. God love that provided a way for our redemption through the death of his own son for a sinful creator such as man. This love cannot be understood by the world. If fact we as Christians have trouble understanding this love.

Facts about being the Sons of God
The facts about being the sons of God are: 1.    We are sons now 2.    However we do not know that we shall be 3.    But when Christ appears we know we shall be like him 4.    For we shall see him face to face

A look at I Cor 13 These verses must be understood with I Corinthians 13. We see the greatest gift is love (greater than faith and hope) and without love we are nothing. In verse 9 Paul states that we know in part, and prophesy in part; in other words we do not and cannot know the complete picture till Christ returns. One day soon we will see Christ face to face and at that time faith will become sight, hope will be fulfilled, and love will be truly understood.

Putting away of Childish things
As John writes it is this hope of being the sons of God that keeps us pure from the world (the lust of the eyes, the lust of the flesh and the pride of life). Paul calls this step of a Christian as the putting away of childish things in I Cor. 13:11. When I was a child, I used to speak as a child, reason as a child: when I became a man, I did away with childish things.

A vessel of Honor Finally, as Paul states in II Timothy 2:20,21 Now in a large house there are not only gold and silver vessels, but also vessels of wood and of earthware, and some to honor and some to dishonor. There, if a man cleanses himself these things, he will be a vessel for honor, sanctified, useful to the Master, prepared for every good work. My I be a vessel honor and, sanctified; cleanse and made useful for the Master’s use as I journey in this world.

I John 3:4-6 4 Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law. 5 And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin. 6 Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him.

I John 3:7,8 7 Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous. 8 He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.

I John 3:9,10 9 Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. 10 In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.

I John 3:11, 12 11 For this is the message that ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another. 12 Not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother's righteous.

I John 3:13 13 Marvel not, my brethren, if the world hate you.

I John 3:14 14 We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death. 15 Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him.

I John 3:16,17 16 Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. 17 But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?

I John 3:18-20 18 My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth. 19 And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him. 20 For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things.

I John 3:21,22 . 21 Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God. 22 And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.

I John 3:23,24 23 And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment. 24 And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.

I John 4:1,2 1 Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world. 2 Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God:

I John 4:3 3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world

I John 4:4-6 4 Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world. 5 They are of the world: therefore speak they of the world, and the world heareth them. 6 We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.

I John 4:7-9 7 Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. 8 He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love. 9 In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.

I John 4:10,11 10 Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. 11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another.

I John 4:12-14 12 No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us. 13 Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit. 14 And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world.

I John 4:15-17 15 Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God. 16 And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him. 17 Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world.

I John 4:18-21 18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love. 19 We love him, because he first loved us. 20 If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen? 21 And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also.

Outline of I John Chapter 5
Witness of Victorious Living Witness of man Witness of God Witness of Answer Prayer Witness of a Clean Life Witness of true love

I John 5:1-3 1 Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God: and every one that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him. 2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments. 3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.

I John 5:4,5 4 For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith. 5 Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?

Witness of Victorious Living
The whatsoever is verse four represents our faith. Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evident evidents of things not seem

I John 5:6-8 6 This is he that came by water and blood, even Jesus Christ; not by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit is truth. 7 For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one. 8 And there are three that bear witness in earth, the Spirit, and the water, and the blood: and these three agree in one.

I John 5:9-11 9 If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater: for this is the witness of God which he hath testified of his Son. 10 He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son.

I John 5: 11-13 11 And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. 13 These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.

I John 5: 14,15 14 And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us: 15 And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.

I John 5: 16-18 16 If any man see his brother sin a sin which is not unto death, he shall ask, and he shall give him life for them that sin not unto death. There is a sin unto death: I do not say that he shall pray for it. 17 All unrighteousness is sin: and there is a sin not unto death. 18 We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not; but he that is begotten of God keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him not.

I John 5:19,20 19 And we know that we are of God, and the whole world lieth in wickedness. 20 And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.

I John 5:21 21 Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen.
