Hal Tompkins Photon Systemstompkins@slac.stanford.edu October 30, 2007 1 LCLS Photon Systems Installation and Commissioning Presentation to Facility Advisory Committee October 29, 2007 Hal Tompkins LCLS Photon Systems Deputy Manager

Hal Tompkins Photon Systemstompkins@slac.stanford.edu October 30, 2007 2 Important Dates Beam Dump Co-occupancy - 12/5/07 FEE and NEH Co-occupancy - 12/21/07 FEE and NEH Beneficial Occupancy - 3/21/08 (NEH elevator - 4/08?) X-Ray Transport Tunnel Co-occupancy - 1/08/08 FEH Co-occupancy - 3/24/08 Tunnel/FEH Beneficial Occupancy - 6/23/08

Hal Tompkins Photon Systemstompkins@slac.stanford.edu October 30, 2007 6 Beam Dump Installation Electron beam dump installations are critical. Must install two electron-photon stopper systems, fast shutter, collimator, penetration tube, and backfill steel and concrete in Muon Wall 1. Expect to certify PPS though electron beam dump in 10/09. This allows electrons into BTH, UH, etc.

Hal Tompkins Photon Systemstompkins@slac.stanford.edu October 30, 2007 8 FEE Installation Fixed Mask, Adjustable Slits, Gas Detectors, and Gas Attenuator make up phase 1 (June 11-July 1, 2008). Calorimeter, K-spectrometer, Soft X-ray imager, and Direct imager make up phase 2 (July 2-23, 2008). Soft x-ray Offset Mirror System (SOMS) is phase 3 (Jan. 16-Feb. 5, 2009). Note the gap between phase 2 and phase 3. This is driven by deferring purchase of the FEE Mech/Vac (mainly collimators) and pop-in monitors to FY09 for budgetary reasons. It is not driven by delivery date of SOMS mirror substrates. Hard x-ray Offset Mirror System (HOMS) is phase 4. This is close to being delivery-date dependent (Feb. 6-26, 2009). PPS/BCS installed by 2/09.

Hal Tompkins Photon Systemstompkins@slac.stanford.edu October 30, 2007 9 NEH Installation Vacuum transport through hutches 1 and 2 will be installed. Anticipate LUSI will handle vacuum transport in hutch 3. XES laser installation begins with NEH B.O. and is expected to be complete in 5/09. Commissioning the laser diagnostics and controls follows immediately afterwards. AMO experiment installation begins with NEH B.O. and is slated to be complete in 7/09.

Hal Tompkins Photon Systemstompkins@slac.stanford.edu October 30, 2007 11 Tunnel/FEH Installation X-Ray Tunnel and Far Experimental Hall component purchases also delayed until FY09. FEH hutch construction estimated at 8-9 months.

Hal Tompkins Photon Systemstompkins@slac.stanford.edu October 30, 2007 14 FEL Commissioning Timeline

Hal Tompkins Photon Systemstompkins@slac.stanford.edu October 30, 2007 15 Commissioning Nominal first beam to FEE is 5/14/09 Commission the X-ray diagnostics simultaneously with commissioning the undulator. Start with Direct Imager, then move on to Adjustable Slits, Gas Detectors, the Attenuators, and the Calorimeter. Then do K-spectrometer and Soft X-ray Imager. Align and characterize the spontaneous radiation beam Measure photon flux per pulse Find SASE and optimize gain (first at low energy) Deliver beam through offset mirror systems to experiments in NEH hutches.

Hal Tompkins Photon Systemstompkins@slac.stanford.edu October 30, 2007 16 Commissioning Stabilize FEL for User Run User Run SLAC shutdown Recommission upstream pieces of LCLS If ready, transport x-rays into Tunnel and Far Hall Detect x-rays in Far Hall - complete CD 4 Continue working on lasing at higher energies Alternate machine work with experiments

Hal Tompkins Photon Systemstompkins@slac.stanford.edu October 30, 2007 17 Summary Very tight schedule between first beam to FEE and User Run - driven by FY08 budget limitations. Very tight schedule between AMO experiment installation and User Run - driven by FY08 budget limitations. We think we have a good shot at lasing at 1.5 nm for the User Run - stability is a bigger question. Operation at.15 nm for the User Run will likely be with spontaneous radiation.
