1 2/26/2008 To : Teknisk-Naturvetenskapliga fakulteten Uppsala universitet Dekanus, Prof. Jan-Otto Carlsson Box 256 SE-751 05 UPPSALA From: FAIR/NuSTAR R 3 B and EXL collaborations and FAIR/NuSTAR Calorimeter Working Group (CWG) Re:Beamtime for CWGat the TSL facility Name of facility: The Svedberg Laboratory, Uppsala, Sweden. Contact Person: Alexander Prokofiev (EXL). alexander.prokofiev@tsl.uu.se Usual dates of PAC meeting (Next PAC meeting): Deadline for proposals, Jan. 15, Mar. 15, Jul. 15 and Oct. 15. Average time between proposal submission and experiment schedule: Scheduled period 3 – 9 months after proposal deadlines. Characteristics of proton beam: 180 MeV, 10 3 s -1 uniformly over one cm 2 (line B). <180 MeV beams need development. Difficulties in scheduling due to main activity in proton therapy at 180 MeV. Characteristics of gamma beam: - DAQ support: No local DAQ available. Optical cable between experimental hall and counting room. Local support: Electronics pool, mechanical and electronics workshops. Others: LU (EXL/R3B) has performed one test in line B. Cost of beam time: 400€/h. 2008-06-17 We are in pending state with possible beamtime in October/December 2008 or at Spring 2009. Now to be discussed within the Technical Boards (R3B, EXL?) Followed by a letter of support from SFAIR

2 + THE SVEDBERG LABORATORY + Beam time request + Submission date: 071015____ Experiment code (approved project): FA192_____ Title of experiment: Testing the EXL/R3B calorimeters Type of experiment: Commercial (directly paying) project (Yes/No) ___ Research project at Uppsala University (Yes/No) Yes____ Spokesperson for the collaboration: Bo Jakobsson Curt Ekström,Alexander Prokofiev TSL/UU P. Golubev, B. Jakobsson, V Avdeichikov LU Tom Auman and the R3B Collaboration FAIR/GSI Marielle Chartier and the EXL Collaboratio No. of shifts left (estimate): _______ No. of shifts requested: 12_______ Beam ions Energy/nucleon Beam intensity Target Number of shifts H+ ____ 180, 90 MeV _ 1 nA ______exp ____ 6 + 6 _______ 1)Can (should) the beam-time be split.... No splitting within beam energies 2) Lower limit of time that you can accept 6 shifts (one energy) Times or time intervals for runs (months, weeks, weekdays,...) 4) Time for preparation (and removal) Beamlinefive days (one day), table for detector mounting Counting roomfive days (one day), optical cable to target area 5) technical support is requested from TSL - electronics: pool electronics – expert personnel: beamline "coordinator" - other: access to mech. workshop 6) Compatibility with other experiments -sharing with teraphy for 180 MeV 7) Is the situation clear for equipment and personnel (from outside TSL) Yes 8) Other boundary conditions or requests - 180 MeV proton beam in line B as in previous run Short summary describing the experiment and its status: We construct the target recoil detector system for the R3B/EXL programs at FAIR/GSI...................... For an initial beam-time request, please attach a description and justification
