Research and Development Group Recommendations for the next school development plan

Philosophy for Children – Ken Brechin/Jane Arthur Recommendations – As an effective technique to develop the 5R’s (plus one), P4C training should be made available to all teachers Explicit P4C lessons should be written into SOW in Science and English (especially new science for 21 st century course P4C is designed to fit in with Emotional Literacy, Citizenship, ‘Values Education’ strong consideration should be given into explicitly infusing P4C into the new year 7/8 curriculum – use it to build a real learning community.

Strategies for improving Boys motivation – Heidi Brown/Charlotte Philipson/Michael Smith Recommendations: School should set up ‘Operation 602’ as an integral support mechanism for year 11 boys – there is a cohort there every year who need it. Students could be identified at end of year 10 Explicit times should be built in for mentoring and target setting with identified boys.

What really stresses our kids? – Poppy Saltonstall/Steve Goad/ Carol Davenport Some of the issues causing stress will be reduced if: we go to 80 minutes – fewer changeovers start a cashless system in the lunch hall Also suggested by students: have a Highway code for corridors that is enforced Make classrooms like the L2L classrooms Sell the ‘no hands up rule’ better, because at the moment it is causing stress!

Effective questioning – Jill Travers/ Fergus Hegarty Many of the strategies being developed and researched come from the PEEL organisation - many of the ideas could be effectively disseminated via staff training. The PEEL question dice should be incorporated into the Interactive Learning Wall Effective questioning techniques to be written into Science for 21 st century SoW

The Question Dice

New Graphic Organisers – Kenny McKnight/ Gillian Dunglinson/Mike Wilkinson Recommendations – Students find that graphic organisers are really effective, but that they very rarely are asked to use them in class. Staff training on how graphic organisers should be used effectively should be given to all staff. Many of the delegates at the workshop were unfamiliar of their use!

New Graphic Organisers – Kenny McKnight/ Gillian Dunglinson/Mike Wilkinson

Using Vodcasts to transform home learning – Mark Simpson Recommendations – Mark Simpson is already working with departments in terms of developing their own downloadable Vodcasts. A rolling plan of departments generating Vodcasts should be written into SDP for next year and beyond.

Investigating the Impact of the Learning Environment on Student Learning – John Crowe/Helen McGarr/Lyn Anderson Recommendations – Enforce Highway code around school The best classrooms? – where there is lots of space! Small teaching groups Sort out the lunchtime arrangements – it is causing a lot of stress!

Pre Assessment Techniques – Graham MacPhail A work in progress!
