2 What do we Mean by 100% Sustainable? All vineyards and wineries are fully accredited to an independently audited sustainable programme such as Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand, certified organic and biodynamic programmes and ISO 14001

3 Why the Commitment to Sustainability? It’s the right thing to do! Good for the environment and society = a given Also good for business: Will ultimately improve wine quality. Meets consumer demands for environmental products. Increasingly will be passport to trade.

4 What is Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand ? Framework for best viticulture and winemaking practices that protect the environment and are economically sustainable. Established in 1995 for vineyard management. Extended to winery management in 2002. Vehicle for swift, practical employment of research, plus feedback mechanism.

5 Sustainable Winegrowing Common Practices In the vineyard –Soils: natural fertilisers, composting etc –Disease / pest control: goal of nil-residue. Close monitoring of vine. Biological alternatives. –Water reduction: use water- use calculator. –Reduction of carbon footprint: establishment of native vegetation. In the winery –Winery waste management: reduce input, recycling, reduction in packaging. –Practical energy efficiency: gravity production, building insulation, use of latent heat, solar panels etc. –Water reduction : collect rainwater; reuse rinse water for other purposes where purity is not crucial
