The Price is Right A 2 nd Grade Math lesson involving the counting of money

Over the weekend, I did some shopping and picked up a few things How much money did I spend? How much money did I have left?

I started out with $5.00 Lemons cost $0.67 Pitcher cost $ 1.50 Glasses cost $ 1.99

What shall I do first? In order for me to find out the total, I need to add the cost of the items I purchased. $0.67 + $1.50 + $1.99 = ?

Prior Knowledge - Regrouping Remember, we add going from right to left. Because these are 3-digit numbers we must think about place value Ones, tens, hundreds going from right to left When we add the ones column and find ourselves with a ten we carry it onto the tens column

Let’s see how that works 2 1 $0.67 + $1.50 $1.99 ------------ $4.16 The total came out to $4.16

How much money did I have left? In order for us to find out how much money I have left from the $5.00 I started with I need to take the total amount of $4.16 away from $5.00 $5.00 - $4.16 = ?

Here we go again… Regrouping $5.00 - $4.16 ------------ $0.84 My change was $0.84

Let’s try some problems on your own Here are some receipts I have from different stores I’ve blacked out the total and change received I’d like you to find the total and the change received
