2 Where to look for internship jobs Job folder of Joint Institution Job Information System (JIJIS) at: http://www.jijis.org.hk/jijis –Submit app. letter & resume according to instructions listed on the job notices Emails from ISMT or SBM (some companies approach Dept or School for nominations directly) –Submit App. Letter & resume to ISMT or SBM according to email instructions Vacancies usually announced in Jan-May Some companies will come and conduct briefing sessions to give further info Check which ones are suitable before applying

3 Application letter & CV Help provided by SBM Communication Tutors –Review English in job application letters & CVs for graduate jobs & one-year internship jobs –Conduct mock interview and/or general English conversation sessions to improve confidence Contact Mr. Patrick Megan at pmmegan@ust.hk early to set up an appointment for the above services

4 Selection Process Selection processes (interviews & offers) are done by the recruiting companies themselves If you are given an internship offer and you decide to accept it, you should submit the application for leave from study to Dept for approval - A ttach a copy of internship contract Dept will approve if the internship job is deemed to be relevant to your study and the company well recognized

5 Status during internship year Your student status will be suspended during the internship year –Can't use some university facilities like the sports facilities or check out books from library (a 1-yr library card can be issued at a cost of $150 upon application) –Can’t apply for the MTR student travel card Your email accounts will be kept active to get –News and info preparing you to come back to your study the next year –Info about application for grant/loan, extension of student locker, scholarship application, FYP planning and other course offering info, etc.)

6 Benefits of Internship Gain real work experience Chance to learn about communication skills Become a more mature and responsible individual Help you formulate or fine-tune your career plan Enrich your CVs to make you more competitive in job search in graduating year May have a better selection of FYP Many C+ or B- average student come back becoming A average students in final year because they can make better sense of what’s taught in class

7 Drawbacks of Internship Graduate one year later with different classmates May end up learning very little things during that internship year if one does not actively take initiative to learn from the work environment –There's always the risk that the duties assigned to students may differ from what are promised initially –Should try to find out more about the job during interviews before committing to the offer

10 2003/04 IS Internships - On average 15-20 students join 1-yr internship each year since 1994 - In 2004/05, 15 students joined the following programs: DBS Bank (HK) Ltd – Project Placement (1) Freescale Semiconductor (Motorola) – Co-op Student (3) HKMA – Temp Programmer (3) HSBC – Co-op Student Trainee (1) IBM – Placement Student (1) PricewaterhouseCoopers Ltd – Technical Support Assistant (3) SFC – Industrial Placement Trainee (1) Time Warner Hong Kong Ltd – IT Annual Intern (1) Yun Choy Ltd – IT Intern (in Dongguan) (1) * With monthly salary ranges from $6,500 to $8,300

11 Commitment to offer Students must make careful considerations before committing to accept an offer Students are strongly discouraged to revoke commitment once it is made –It may breed ill-feelings for companies and give them bad impression on our students –Other students may be deprived of the chance to get a good offer
