4. Project Genesis Changes in City requirements Minneapolis Code 56.70 Disconnect all roof drains from the sanitary sewer system. (SS) Central’s internal roof drain system designed to discharge stormwater into the City’s sanitary sewer system (SS). 2005 City notice of mandate “Roof drains need to be disconnected from the SS by a licensed plumber. Stormwater needs to be redirected to discharge outside onto grade or directly connected to a storm drain if one is available.”

5. First Step Disconnection #1 2008 - Disconnected NE drainpipe. Drained to new surface stormwater detention basin and underground chamber Total cost: $15-$20 K

6. City & Central get serious We decided to do more…. Underground infiltration / stormwater detention system captures roof runoff. Diverts additional stormwater from SS E side of property. Total area served 1.08 acres Applied 2010 MWMO Stewardship Funds Action Grant using BMP & “handling” 60% more water than required.

11. Environmentally & Fiscally Responsible Central Saves. Project Nearly Paid with Deferred Cost Savings Now $17,500 /yr. storm water treatment fees Almost all will go away when detention project is finished If borrow $130,000 at 6% for 10 years, the payment is $17,660 annually City Saves. Reduction in water preserves systems - storm & sanitary.

12. Public-Private Partnership MWMO Goals (and Ours) Goal 1: Improve water quality or improve water and natural resource management. Be good stewards - care for creation. Goal 2: Build community understanding, knowledge, and initiative related to water and natural resources issues and solutions.

Reduces runoff from parking lot & street → pollutants, street & soil surface materials flow into SS Issue of justice to the ELCA Universal, sustainable access to sufficient, safe, acceptable, accessible and affordable water

14. Goal 2: Build Community Understanding Intergenerational education for Central and our neighborhood. More than awareness. Educate to change behavior Personal accountability for stewardship of natural resources. Tied water conservation & appreciation into many Central activities.
