1 Development of Spatially Integrated Roadway Safety Management Joon Jin Song, Ph.D. Assistant Professor of Statistics University of Arkansas, Fayetteville Problem Statement  Motor vehicle fatalities are the leading cause of unintentional injury deaths, followed by falls, poisonings, and drownings (about 16,000, 10,000, and 4,400 deaths per year, respectively) (NSC 2002).  Societal economic losses from these crashes are huge, estimated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to exceed $230 billion in 2000.  Socioeconomic and demographic factors are known to be associated with many highway safety issues pertaining to teenage and older drivers, drunk driver, sleepy drivers, female drivers, and race/ethnicity differences in both child safety-seat and driver’s seat-belt usage rate (Miaou and Sui, 2004).  Integration of 1)geo-referenced data sets 2)multidisciplinary theories and technologies

4 Objectives  To develop a conceptual and analytical framework for identifying socioeconomic or demographic risk factors and understanding the relationship among the potential risk factors and highway safety  To integrate knowledge and technologies across disciplines and paradigms  To integrate several databases for expanding a range of the potential risk factors  To initiate traffic safety surveillance system in Arkansas Research Implementation  To help planners and policy-makers in policy development for reducing risk factors and increasing preventive factors  To develop potential prevention policy or program for reducing impaired driving  To help communication between the State and local planners  To motivate a spatial-multiscale framework, such as state, county, city, and census tract.
