Librarians are increasing student access to electronic materials through OverDrive and the roll-out of a NOOK lending program in each school.
3
OverDrive is a company that provides access to electronic books and other digital materials, in coordination with existing WCS library services.
4
Technology shift towards e-readers, including, smart phones and tablets, warrants inclusion of digital materials in library offerings. Currently, two-tenths of one percent of our collection is digital. Students are adroit at using this technology and actively seek it out. Relieves the District of the responsibility of coordinating Digital Rights Management (DRM) of electronic content.
5
OverDrive accommodates over 30 different e-readers and smart phones, including the NOOK, Kindle, Sony e-reader, i-Pad, i-Phone, Droid phones and computers. In addition to e-books, OverDrive offers digital audiobooks in MP3 and WMA formats. Provides 24/7 access to electronic content.
6
OverDrive gives teachers the ability to upload student/staff created electronic content into the catalog for others to access. 50% of the cost of the service is credited to us to purchase e-books each year. OverDrive is offered by the Buffalo & Erie County Public Library for patrons, with limited materials appropriate for K-12 students.
7
District librarians have developed a collection of electronic materials for all schools. This catalog is separate from our Destiny catalog, but OverDrive will link to Destiny for increased access to materials. Each level (EM, MS,HS) was allotted one third of the collection development funds ($5k!) to purchase e-books for their level. District librarians selected titles to include in our OverDrive catalog based on our selection policy and practice.
8
Families and staff download free Adobe epub software and identify their e-reader devices. This is necessary for Digital Rights Management (DRM) of copyrighted materials. I-Phone, I-Pad, Android or Blackberry users download the OverDrive Media Console App
9
Students and staff log onto the WCS OverDrive catalog, check out materials and download materials onto e-reader (exact download method varies depending on type of e- reader). Younger students are not able to check out materials reserved for older students. http://williamsville.lib.overdrive.com http://williamsville.lib.overdrive.com

Target date: January 4 th, 2012 OverDrive provides extensive marketing and instructional materials. We are in the process of selecting materials for use. OverDrive provides a visiting “Digital Bookmobile” which we are considering. Instruction methods planned by librarians include: class instruction, professional development workshops, outreach to students during lunches and study halls, faculty/staff presentations and PTSA events. Advertising in PTSA newsletters and WCS website.
12
Premise of OverDrive is “BYOD”—bring your own device. Each district library has acquired several “simple touch” black and white NOOKs. NOOK lending program is off and running (varied by building)! Two per building (a third one is coming!) are available for students to borrow from the library, with parental permission, Available for classroom WCS librarians select titles to be downloaded onto each Nook through B&N’s purchase order process.
