Wayne Betts Associate Director, Student Services (Admissions)

The world is changing, and so is UWA  Leading universities around the world are restructuring their courses  Most graduates will have multiple careers, and need a wide range of knowledge and skills  After consulting widely, UWA decided upon a new course structure for the benefit of future students and the wider community New courses 2012 | Knowledge for a changing world

The new course framework will:  Make choice simpler  Offer more flexibility  Provide the best possible student experience  Strike a balance between breadth and depth  Develop key skills (such as research & communication) New courses 2012 | Knowledge for a changing world

Our five undergraduate degrees  Bachelor of Arts  Bachelor of Commerce  Bachelor of Design  Bachelor of Science  Bachelor of Philosophy (Honours) The same fields of studies - offered in new ways. New courses 2012 | Knowledge for a changing world

Undergraduate degrees  Common structure  ‘Degree specific’ major sequence  Optional second major  Complementary units  Broadening units  Greater opportunities to integrate study abroad  Optional 4th year Honours program New courses 2012 | Knowledge for a changing world

Bachelor of Philosophy (Honours)  Prestigious program – limited number of places  Minimum ATAR of 98.00  Available in any discipline area  Integrated honours program  One unit in language other than English  Residential college experience  Supported overseas study experience New courses 2012 | Knowledge for a changing world

Benefits for students  Simpler, more flexible and more consistent framework for all courses  Broader knowledge and skills to equip graduates well for future challenges  More informed and mature basis for choosing vocational or academic specialisation  Easier movement from field to field during and after the first degree  Fairer access to professions New courses 2012 | Knowledge for a changing world

Support for the new structure: Business “Graduates in the modern world need to be aware of a breadth of issues... the changes being made at UWA respond to this important need.” Michael Chaney, Chairman Woodside and National Australia Bank, and Chancellor UWA New courses 2012 | Knowledge for a changing world

Support for the new structure: Current Students “New Courses 2012 is all about expanding horizons. Engaging with education across a broad spectrum of discipline areas will enable students to develop a strong foundation before embarking upon specialised professional courses.” Emma Greeney, Student Guild President 2010 New courses 2012 | Knowledge for a changing world

Support for the new structure: Schools “A three-year Bachelor degree with certain common requirements will better equip students in choosing their ultimate professional direction.” Tony Stopher, Principal St Mark’s Anglican Community School New courses 2012 | Knowledge for a changing world

Support for the new structure: Professions “I support the changes.
