2 Mass media is our only connection to the big world. English is the language of international news agencies. Thus, the translation of modern media texts is and will be extremely widespread. This work is an attempt to find ways to adapt culturally marked and emotionally colored PU to Ukrainian readers.

3 The subject of our investigation is structural, semantic and etymological features of PU in various classifications and the peculiarities of their translation into Ukrainian. The purpose of our investigation is to elucidate the role of English-language PU in the texts of modern media discourse and find out the peculiarities of their translation.

4 to provide general overview of English media discourse; to identify the term “phraseological unit”; to consider different classifications of PU; to determine the functions of PU in the texts of media discourse; to define the main ways of translating PU;

7 A phraseological unit is a sustainable indivisible phrase or sentence that acts like a separate lexical unit. Words that make up PU, in most cases, partially or completely lose their own lexical meaning.

15 The translator faces 2 main difficulties when dealing with idioms: to recognize and interpret an idiom correctly find the most suitable rendering of an idiom into the target language We have defined the functions of English-language PU in the texts of modern media discourse and the peculiarities of their translation into Ukrainian.
