2 1989 Hungary had been facing severe economic, political, social and international problems, and Hungarians demanded changes in their government

3 1989  Freedom of expression, free elections, trade unions, and freedom of press  A better economy and living standards: poverty, food shortages and inflation overwhelmed the people  The removal of the Soviet troops. The Soviet military control had only increased since the Hungarian Revolution of 1956.  The withdrawal from the Warsaw Pact. Many wanted to join NATO instead.

7 1991 József Antall  First democratically elected Prime Minister in Hungary after fall of Communism  Teacher, librarian, historian and political figure  Played an active role in the Hungarian Revolution of 1956, and was barred from teaching and publishing until 1963  Member of several parties, such as: the Independent Smallholders’ Party and the Hungarian Democratic Forum  Main goal: create a democratic state
