AXELOS - GLOBAL BEST PRACTICE9 9 Name the country?

AXELOS - GLOBAL BEST PRACTICE10AXELOS - GLOBAL BEST PRACTICE10 Name the country?

AXELOS - GLOBAL BEST PRACTICE11AXELOS - GLOBAL BEST PRACTICE11 Can you combine PRINCE2 with Agile? You can combine anything with anything! Should we combine these two? Are they too different? Are they mutually exclusive? Does it require a huge leap of faith?

AXELOS - GLOBAL BEST PRACTICE12AXELOS - GLOBAL BEST PRACTICE12 In brief: what is Agile? ‘Invented’ in 2001 with the Agile Manifesto A wide umbrella term that covers many things Scrum, Kanban, XP, user stories, daily stand-ups, sprints Collaborative ethos with rich communication A lot of it is just a set of techniques Some profound differences though.

AXELOS - GLOBAL BEST PRACTICE13AXELOS - GLOBAL BEST PRACTICE13 In brief: what is PRINCE2? A de facto standard for project management Developed from 1996 onwards with a major revision in 2009 Projects in controlled environments Some baggage, perceived as  bureaucracy, waterfall, document driven Some real power  Management by exception, stages, Business Case, controlled project start.

AXELOS - GLOBAL BEST PRACTICE14AXELOS - GLOBAL BEST PRACTICE14 They are perceived as very different Light versus heavy Emergent versus predictive Communication centric versus documentation centric Collaborative versus adversarial...but is this fair?...no, not really,...in fact, not at all!

AXELOS - GLOBAL BEST PRACTICE15AXELOS - GLOBAL BEST PRACTICE15 Beware prejudice!

AXELOS - GLOBAL BEST PRACTICE16AXELOS - GLOBAL BEST PRACTICE16 First things first: they look at different things PRINCE2 looks at how to manage and direct a project  it doesn't consider delivery  you can use it on any project Most of agile (95%) looks at how to deliver product  it doesn't look at the wider context  it is predominantly focussed on software.

AXELOS - GLOBAL BEST PRACTICE17AXELOS - GLOBAL BEST PRACTICE17 Understand the context of your work Are you in a project or product environment?...you are probably in both! How can you tell the difference?  complex or routine  needs organising or straightforward  unique or done before  big or small.

AXELOS - GLOBAL BEST PRACTICE18AXELOS - GLOBAL BEST PRACTICE18 Understand the Layer Cake! Use PRINCE2 in the right place Use Agile in the right place too Then weave them together... …like the ingredients of a cake…...they don't exist in a parallel.

AXELOS - GLOBAL BEST PRACTICE19AXELOS - GLOBAL BEST PRACTICE19 Advantages of the marriage Allows you to scale Corporate friendly Get the best of both worlds  get control and good governance  get flexibility and pragmatism Get some method into the madness.

AXELOS - GLOBAL BEST PRACTICE20AXELOS - GLOBAL BEST PRACTICE20 What does this look like? (part 1) Management by Exception is key – empower and control – enable self-organisation and autonomy

AXELOS - GLOBAL BEST PRACTICE21AXELOS - GLOBAL BEST PRACTICE21 What does this look like? (part 2) Well crafted Work Packages and Product Descriptions. The Agilometer Flexible Business Case (based around outcomes?) Some requirements may (will?) not be delivered Different funding mechanisms (e.g. drip-feed) – Is procurement an energiser or an energy-sapper? Timely decision making.

AXELOS - GLOBAL BEST PRACTICE22AXELOS - GLOBAL BEST PRACTICE22 What does this look like? (part 3) ‘The honest protection of the quality level’ – Well checked, well documented and well designed Checking (even auditing) the (agile) behaviours A clued-up and switched on sponsor or ’exec’ …and a clued-up and switched on assurance function.

AXELOS - GLOBAL BEST PRACTICE23AXELOS - GLOBAL BEST PRACTICE23 Features Time Cost Features Quality Variable Fixed Traditional ApproachPRINCE2 Agile Approach This is different; very different!

AXELOS - GLOBAL BEST PRACTICE24AXELOS - GLOBAL BEST PRACTICE24 What is in the new product? It is not an answer to the ‘traditional ills’ It is a tailored version of PRINCE2 Collaboratively built Will work with any established agile approach Credible exam Potentially means that there is no need for major change.

AXELOS - GLOBAL BEST PRACTICE25AXELOS - GLOBAL BEST PRACTICE25 What do you need to do next? Nothing! Take stock – where are you now?...where are you trying to get to? Adjust what you have? Remove the baggage Train up to another level?

AXELOS - GLOBAL BEST PRACTICE26AXELOS - GLOBAL BEST PRACTICE26 In summary They may look like oil and water but if you know how to mix them it can take your projects and working practices to another level
