Brainstorm and list all the reasons why one mouse can have up to 140 babies/year, while humans can only have ~1 baby/year? 3/9/15 Date:3/9/15Topic:Reproductive StrategiesPage # ___

Today in Room 315… ADMIT SLIP: Why do mice have more babies than humans? HW: Write another paragraph for critter paper CONTENT OBJ: SW differentiate between r and K selection LANG. OBJ: SW write notes in journal ANNOUNCEMENTS: Unit Test on Fri!! AGENDA: r vs. K selection Mating behavior videos Sexual Selection Critter Assign intro EXIT SLIP: Brainstorm your critter’s reproductive strategy Date:3/9/15Topic:Reproductive StrategiesPage # ___

Admit Slip Share Out Mice vs. Humans

r vs. K strategists* r strategists = organisms that live in unstable environments (?) that make many “cheap” offspring Ex. Mouse K strategists = organisms that live in stable environments that make few, “expensive” offspring Ex. Humans “Strategy” = reproductive plan/method

Copy into journal… Doesn’t matter how many other organisms in environment # of other organisms has impact

Natural selection As you know, animals can be selected for or against… K- strategists would survive best in an environment that was “K selected” * r strategists would survive best in an environment that was “r selected” * Name 3 K selected organisms Large mammals (elephants, bears, whales) Name 3 r selected organisms Rodents, reptiles, insects, weeds (think RAPID growth/production)

Mating Behaviors Can you think of any? Discuss in groups… How do animals attract their mates? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DWlLPtaw2hw https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wn3xluIRh1Y https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o42C6ajjqWg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nS1tEnfkk6M

Sexual Selection* “Natural selection arising through preference by one sex for certain characteristics in individuals of the other sex” The “most appealing” organisms find mates and are able to reproduce. Those traits are then passed on to their offspring, which in turn allow them a better chance of reproducing. Ex. blue-footed boobies (Bluer feet = better chance of reproducing)

Sexual Selection w/ Humans Does sexual selection happen with humans? In what way? What are traits that might allow someone to be selected for? With animals, is bigger and prettier always better?

Sneaker Males* Reproductive strategy of some male organisms that may not be as “appealing” for mates Instead of competing against other males, they “sneak” in and mate with the female when the bigger male isn’t looking https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OEqsgwyvtq c https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OEqsgwyvtq c

Critter Roject Part 3! How does your critter reproduce?? Go over “roject” guidelines Due Monday, March 16 th via email (I will not be here! It is still due!) Pictures may be turned into Mr. Louis on Monday if not attached to email.
