8 Science and Innovation Network: Objectives
Collaboration - including identifying opportunities, horizon scanning and facilitating sharing of scientific knowledge Inform UK policy making – both on S&I policy and other policy areas that use science Influence policy abroad across range of policy areas These are under review. Our objectives in Europe 1 & 2 Collaboration - we scope out areas where UK would benefit from S&I collaboration with researchers, innovators in other countries and facilitate this – workshops, roundtables, missions, seminars, videos 3&4 Influence - we seek to inform UK policy by responding to requests from government departments on what’s going on in other countries on science and innovation-related policies. - we report proactively - we lobby and work with colleagues in Embassies on science issues. Work towards a number of government goals – support specific policy areas (climate change, agriculture, security etc) but most work also fits into FCO prosperity agenda. Support Ministerial Visits and work of Chief Scientific Advisor The Science and Innovation Network (SIN) was established in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) in 2000, in response to the growing importance of science, technology and innovation for the UK’s future. International collaboration in science and innovation is vital for meeting policy challenges on a global scale. Challenges such as pandemic disease, climate change, and food security, require the ability to engage other governments with, and through, sound science. For these reasons, the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills and the Foreign & Commonwealth Office jointly fund a network of Science Officers overseas. The Science and Innovation Network consists of around 90 staff, based in 40 British Embassies, High Commissions and Consulates, across 25 countries around the world. SIN officers engage with the local science and innovation community in support of UK policy overseas. UNCLASSIFIED
