3 Camp MD Overview Camp MD: Medical Detectives (Camp MD) Grades 9-12 Youth interested in a career in medicine or other health careers Cost $50 (scholarships available) 2 days IU School of Medicine (IUPUI Campus) Mid June

4 Camp MD Genesis “The story of us” 1 st Camp MD - June 2008 A collaboration of MICI-AHEC +IUSM Office of Multicultural Affairs IUSM Medical Service-Learning IUSM Health Professions Programs IUSM Students (Med and GRAD) IUSM Faculty and Staff Camp Participants

5 Camp MD Strategy Based on the “pipeline” model Replicate existing successful model (Dr. Camp grades 5-8) Robust marketing strategy to yield inclusion and buy in Target population Faculty Staff Students MICI-AHEC

6 Camp MD Best Practices Developing creative, hands on activities that engage participants Fostering a welcoming environment where participants feel comfortable learning Empower students by helping them see themselves in the role of the healthcare professional (i.e. scrub shirts, stethoscopes, etc.) Identifying nurturing constructive partnerships with like-minded partners who have a common vision and goals for the young people served Think! Creatively!

7 Camp MD Lessons Learned Inclusion and professionally developed integrative curriculum is key Students and parents will participate in other programs offered based on positive experiences Students need to see themselves in the role they desire to become Utilize specialized resources of collaborators e.g. MICI-AHEC’s organizational skills and data collection e.g. students’ enthusiasm e.g. IUSM’s resources such as labs, space, etc.

8 Camp MD Present Plans are currently underway to bring another outstanding program to the youth Indianapolis Thursday June 18- Friday June 19 Theme: Gastrointestinal System Activities/tours: Surgery Skills Center Simulation Center Respiratory Therapy Lab Intro to Various Health Care Professions Campus Tour Health Career Case Scenarios (skits & role play)

9 Camp MD Future Why expand Dr. Camp/Camp MD? To be inclusive and encourage this cultural shift. To empower the students to work together by sharing their projects and ideas with the other campus students. To mentor one another by providing their successful project model to serve as a structural template for creating statewide cohesion while keeping campus individuality for the common project. To include center students at satellite campuses. Center students can contribute to class activities on their own time, and they can put their own creative spin on their extracurricular chapters allowing center students to feel more included, while also giving them ownership of their own local project.

10 Camp MD Future Currently, there are two sites working on a Doctor Camp expansion and we know there CAN and WILL be more in the near future. Our Indianapolis camp would not be possible without the support and partnership from our local MICI-AHEC office Because of the enthusiasm of students like Lisa Fink, we now have multiple project leaders fostering the nine doors to ONE school approach through statewide student engagement opportunities We also have to applaud other inter-professional student volunteers along with Marti Reeser and Rene Jackson in the IUSM Health Professions Program
