7 NATIONAL ANIMAL AND BIRD
The jaguar is the national animal of Guyana. The word jaguar comes from the Amerindian word ‘yaguar’ which means ‘he who kills with one leap’. They are recognizable by their yellow-dark orange coat with dark spots and short legs. The Hoatzin (Canje Pheasant) is the national bird. The Hoatzin rarely flies; it’s pectoral (chest) muscles are under-developed due to the over-development of the crop. They are exclusively herbivores, and digest their food with the help of their crop, like in the stomachs of ruminants. This fermentation process produces a unique and unpleasant odour, which is why Hoatzins are also called ‘stinkbirds’. Jaguar Hoatzin (Canje Pheasant)
