A project to foster Responsible Research and Innovation with society, for society 3rd Scientix Projects’ Networking Event 20 February 2015 – Brussels Maïté Debry, Project Manager

Doing science and innovation with society and for society, including the involvement of society ‘very upstream' in the processes of research and innovation to align their outcomes with the values of society; A key concept at Horizon 2020, cross-cutting issues in this programme. Responsible Research and Innovation is:

RRI DIMENSIONS: Anticipatory, reflective, deliberative, responsive A wide umbrella that brings together different aspects of the relationship between science and innovation with society:

RRI Tools will help transform Research and Innovation in Europe into a process targeted at the grand challenges of our time (science for society) From the DoW where deliberation and reflection are coupled with action (science with society) by training science leaders in the RRI process and by raising awareness of the concept through Europe. The project:

Coordinator Diputy Coordinator Hubs Coordinator Technological Partner The Consortium WP1 Leader WP2 Leader WP4 Leader WP5 Leader WP6 Leader Networks Hub Leaders The Management Board

Workpackages description 1st Phase2nd Phase3rd Phase

The first objective of the project will be to gather all relevant knowledge about RRI, establish a common, working definition for it and test it in an iterative process with the wide range of stakeholders that will be part of the project WP1: Compilation of good practices and development of good practice standards WP2: Assessing the needs and constraints of RRI Stakeholders 1rst Phase: Analysis

Identified stakeholders group concerned by RRI Civil Society Organisation Education Community Industry and Business Researchers Policy Makers

the hot issues in to education for RRI: Make scientific and technological careers attractive to young students Foster sustainable interaction between schools, research institutions, industry and civil society organisations Engagement, inclusion of students and teachers from schools in R&I processes Training teachers to teach STEM using RRI principles, inclusion of RRI as a transversal aspect of STEM teaching in secondary schools POLICY AGENDAS EXPERTS: “Education”

Other education aspects: Involve students in the reflexion about future society and the role that R&I should play in it Promoting community based participatory research projects to make sure that the R&I is more in line with social interests and values POLICY AGENDAS EXPERTS: “Education”

-With the results of WP1 and WP2 identify, prioritize and then produce from 15 to 20 RRITools -Develop the Toolkit, the multimedia 2.0 collaborative platform and the Community of Practice (CoP) WP3: Production of the Toolkit - “la Caixa” Foundation 2nd Phase: Building the Toolkit FLC and IrsiCaixa EVERIS EuroScience WP1 and WP2 leaders and participants

1.Self-assessment tools: To auto evaluate performance on RRI 2.RRI Digital capsules: From text to video, guidelines on specific actions to “become RRI” 3.Good Practice Standards: Good practices with guides for application 4.Training and advocacy resources: Sets of instructions for trainers of the toolkit 5.Library: A repository of reports, papers, handbooks, books… on RRI. 6.Dissemination materials: Leaflefts, posters... etc What is a tool in RRI Tools?

Example of existing tools:

-Will develop and enable implementation of both a training program and an advocacy program based on the RRI Toolkit -It will develop materials, carry a “train the trainers” workshop in Brussels for the Hubs and assess the RRI Hubs in carrying out local trainings. WP4: Training and Advocacy on the RRI Toolkit - University College London Train the Trainers Workshop. Month 24. 3 day workshop in Brussels. Implementation of multiplying training workshops and of the advocacy program (at least 40 workshops, at least 120 meetings with Policy Makers) 3rd Phase: Training and Advocacy
