3 CONFIDENTIAL3 MIXED NUMBERS A Mixed Number indicates the sum of a whole number and a fraction. A number like 11/3 is an example of a mixed number. 1 1/3 = 1 + 1/3

4 CONFIDENTIAL4 Improper Fraction If the numerator is greater than the denominator, then the fractions are called improper fractions. Mixed Numbers can written as improper fraction.

6 CONFIDENTIAL6 MIXED NUMBERS AS IMPROPER FRACTIONS Draw a model for 4 1/6, then write 4 1 as 6 Improper fractions. Since the mixed number is greater than 4, draw 5 models that are divided into 6 equal sections to show sixths. Then shade four wholes and one sixth.

22 CONFIDENTIAL22 Review A mixed number indicates the sum of a whole number and a fraction If the numerator is greater than the denominator, then the fraction is called improper fraction. To convert a mixed number into improper fraction, multiply the whole number and denominator and to the product add the numerator. To convert an improper fraction into a mixed fraction, divide the numerator by the denominator and use the remainder as the numerator of the fraction.
