WHAT IS PHLEBOTOMY It is the process of inserting the needle into the vein for the collection of blood. The phlebotomist is a trained and skilled person who performs the act of phlebotomy.

AIM Is to collect safe blood from Donors (VNRBD)

Objective of Phlebotomy To be able to perform the act of collecting blood with little or no pain.

Phlebotomy Skills Proper donor identification Properly secure & access the vein Maintains the samples integrity Use the right technique Follow the right order of draw Effective communication Listening ability Observant Tolerant

Phlebotomy Process Prepare your trolley Calibrate the blood weighing scale Welcome the donor with a smile Use positive identifier for every donor Make the donor comfortable. Re-assure the donor Check the donor’s form, donor data and label/bar code.

Phlebotomy Process cont Accept or defer the donor Explain the procedure to the donor Check bag for leakages Fix the bag to weighing scale Place the donor’s arm on the arm rest Apply tourniquet in between the shoulder and elbow Hand the soft ball to the donor to squeeze

Phlebotomy Process (cont) Feel for vein (if not visible to see) and select the best one Put on gloves Clean the Phlebotomy site with methylated spirit, starting from the middle outwards (which is called spiral cleaning) or up down cleaning. Follow with providine iodine solution.

Phlebotomy process(cont) Clamp the blood bag tube with an artery forceps Ask the donor to take a deep breath. Gently insert the needle with the bevel turned downwards in an aero plane landing technique (insert not more than a quarter of the needle) into the donors vein and note the time Release the clamp Secure with plaster Mix the blood bag periodically

Phlebotomy process(cont) Interact with the donor Answer any question put to you by the donor. Collect 450mls of blood in 5-7 minutes Clamp the tube with two artery forceps and cut between. Collect the blood samples into the specimen bottles and note the time Release the tourniquet and ask the donor to take a deep breath, gently remove the needle

Phlebotomy process(cont) Discard needle into the sharp container Place a dry cotton wool and apply plaster Change plaster before donor leaves. Ask the donor to keep his/her arm straight and apply pressure on the Phlebotomy site

Phlebotomy process(cont) Strip the blood tubing immediately Observe donor after donation for 5-10 minutes Put blood into a cold chain box and the pilot Samples into the rack Thank the donor and give IPDC Confirm all information on the blood bag, pilot bottles, donor form & lab control sheet(LCS)

Personal Hygiene/Safety Cooperate dressing Hand washing Removal of gloves in between donors Phlebotomist should be aware of policies and guidelines concerning needle stick injury and contamination with blood
