1 Programs without software- intensive system research elements Where most of the software- intensive system safety research resides Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate (http://www.aeronautics.nasa.gov) Fundamental Aeronautics Program (FAP) –Hypersonics –Supersonics –Subsonics: fixed wing –Subsonics: rotary wing Aeronautics Test Program –corporate management of aeronautical facilities Aviation Safety Program –to improve the inherent safety attributes of new and legacy vehicles –overcome aircraft safety technological barriers that would otherwise constrain the full realization of the NGATS Airspace Systems Program –address the Air Traffic Management R&D needs of the Next Generation Air Transportation System (NGATS)

2 Aviation Safety Program PI - Dr. Steve Young PM - Leighton Quon Integrated Intelligent Flight Deck (IIFD) Integrated Vehicle Health Management (IVHM) PI - Dr. Celeste Belcastro PM - Cheryl Allen Aircraft Aging & Durability (AAD) PI - Dr. Rick Young PM - Doug Rohn Integrated Resilient Aircraft Control (IRAC) PI - Dr. Christine Belcastro PM - Joseph Totah Director: Herb Schlickenmaier Principle Investigator (PI) Program Manager (PM) Research in Software-Intensive Systems Assurance and Certification Technologies

3 Decadal Survey of Civil Aeronautics Survey conducted by the National Research Council's Aeronautics and Space Engineering Board to prioritize aeronautics research projects for the next 10 years Identified and ranked 89 research & technology challenges in relation to their potential to: –increase capacity, improve safety & reliability, increase efficiency & performance, reduce energy consumption & environmental impact Selected 51 high-priority challenges in 5 categories –aerodynamics & acoustics –propulsion & power –materials & structures –dynamics, navigation, control and avionics –intelligent and autonomous systems, operations & decision making, human integrated systems, and networking & communications

4 Certification recognized as a barrier Even if individual research challenges are successfully overcome, two key barriers must also be addressed: 1)Certification: Core research is to needed to develop methods for assessing the safety and reliability of complex, software intensive systems. This is essential for NASA, →because this is beyond the current resources of regulators 2)Change Management, Internal & External →managing change from the introduction of new technologies and operational concepts Recommendation #4: NASA should support fundamental research to create the foundations for practical certification standards for new technologies
