9 OGS: Key Goals Make Study Abroad A “When,” Not an “If” Provide an international opportunity for all STJ students Expand enrollment to 1500 by 2012-2013 (from 500+ this year) Create Programs That Stick Close to Our “Home” Values C-Culturally Integrated A-Academically Rich S-Service-Focused S-Safe A-Affordable Utilize Rome & Paris Campuses throughout the Year Expand Short-Term, Faculty-Led, & Semester Programming

13 Academic Planning Committee (APC) Subcommittee on Global Education

14 APC: Strategic Plan Objectives Embed a global perspective in the curriculum as part of every student’s experience to prepare our students for the workplace and the world. Promote cross-cultural understanding and appreciation between University students, faculty, staff and administration, and the less fortunate throughout the world.

15 APC: A Distinction Global education deals with the relations among nations, Intercultural education deals with relations within a nation.

16 APC: Baseline Data A list of STJ Course Offerings in Multicultural/Ethnic Studies which includes courses which focus on these issues. A survey of faculty to find out if and to what extent they include global topics in their courses.

19 APC: Recommendations Put more emphasis on the already existing global aspects of the core and how these relate to other global education initiatives at the University. On the STJ Website create a page, comparable to the first page of the University Libraries site, that has links to the many global education resources at the University as well as to external sites. Develop a database of activities, assignments, and teaching strategies that faculty use to infuse global perspectives into their courses. Have faculty share their experiences abroad not only with other faculty, but with students in the classes they teach and with the large University community. Provide more opportunities for students to have more intercultural out-of-class experiences, drawing on the resources available in New York.

20 APC: Recommendations Find ways to incorporate study abroad experiences into different majors. Utilize our students’ vast cultural diversity as well as that of New York City. Develop intercultural and global learning communities for freshmen. Institute a faculty development program, including a faculty learning community modeled on the CTL Teaching and Technology Fellows, to foster global education. The 2009-2010 Academic Lecture series will focus on global education; encourage the University community to make this central to the University experience during the year. Institute a permanent committee to flesh out these proposals and forge their implementation. To focus attention on all these activities, and in particular to coordinate them, it would be extremely beneficial to have a high- level academic administrator for global education.

21 Mission: Vincentian Service Engaging undergraduate and graduate student through service learning. Supporting Mission and Global Outreach/Understanding through short-term study abroad. Integrating international themes into the curriculum through service—both in New York and abroad.
