Human [computer] interfaces - the car - 2 CSC 8008 John Shearer john.shearer@ncl.ac.uk

Human [computer] interfaces - the car Week 1 - this week – Explore the interfaces and interactions in a car (and their advantages and disadvantages) Week 2 - next week – Explore how this interfaces/interactions may change if under computer control Week 3 – Look into the future and imagine (and explore) how interfaces/interactions may be in a car in the future

Car physical controls and displays

Controls Steering wheel Indicator stick Gear stick Lights Electric windows Displays Speedometer Rev counter Indicators Oil light, battery light

Human factors How well does the car work for normal users – How long does it take to learn? What about for non-normal users – Large, small people – Physically disabled people – etc.

More ideal interfaces Choose a physical controls and/or displays from a car. In groups, discuss what you would consider a more ideal interface for it Spend 15 minutes in your group redesigning your interface to make it more ideal, without adding computing resources. Consider: – How it will be usable by different groups of people – How easy it will be to learn

Presentations Create a brief (2 minute) presentation on your newly designed interface (spend 15 minutes) – Describe your design – Give reasons for your design decisions – Use diagrams / drawings as appropriate.

Presentations and critique …

More ideal interfaces 2 Spend another 10 minutes in your group discussing how adding computing resources may make your design even better. Consider: – What knowledge/data would a computer need? – What decisions would the computer make? – What computing resources might be required? – What user input/output technology? – How much (if any) does the human need to be involved/

Reconfigurable interfaces How might the reconfigurable nature of the interface (as it is software) affect the interface? – Could it adapt to new/different users? Could these adaptations be shared with other cars/users? – What happens if user X moves to a different car? – What about privacy/security concerns? – Any other concerns? – Any safetly issues arising?
