3 Introduction Distribution Management System (DMS) – system that allows the distribution operators to more effectively and efficiently operate and manage the distribution system DMS commonly includes the following software and interfaces User interface Network applications System interfaces – SCADA and OMS DMS unique characteristics Extremely large model size Insertion and removal of temporary modifications Handling of large volume of incremental updates

4 Introduction DMS benefits include the following:
Improve operational efficiency through user interface consolidation (DMS/SCADA/OMS) Improve reliability and safety through better visualization of distribution network status and use of switching plan tools Improve reliability indices and customer satisfaction through faster and more predictable outage restoration Reduce penalty payments through faster outage restoration Reduce energy losses and network operational costs with coordinated Volt/VAR management Reconfigure control center operations dynamically
