We are given a workload: a set of SQL queries and their frequencies Q is: What indices should we build to speed up the workload? Answer:  Attributes in WHERE clauses (queries)  favor an index  Attributes in INSERT/UPDATE/DELETEs  discourage an index  In many DBMSs: your primary key fields get indexed automatically (why?)
