Essential Formulas By Mark Munoz Aileen Nguyen Triet Nguyen Ming Zhong

Introduction While tutoring, there have been many times when tutees have trouble recalling important formulas. This has occurred so frequently, that we felt it would benefit everyone if we put together a “menu” of essential formulas.

Pre-calculus Algebra and Trigonometry are the foundation of every math class. Many of the formulas and ideas found in this group are worth remembering because they are used not only in math courses but in other fields such as physics. Some essential formulas and ideas include the quadratic formula, factoring and trigonometric identities.

Calculus, Single and Multi. Calculus is widely used in advanced science and engineering courses. Familiarity with ideas are important to understand formula derivations and understanding more abstract concepts. Some essential formulas and ideas to remember are the definition of the limit, differentiation rules, the integration rules, power series, Taylor/MaClaurin Series, Mean Value Theorem, and L’Hopital’s Rule, etc.

Linear Algebra and ODE Many upper division engineering/math classes require knowledge of solving a system of equations Most advanced models will involve rate change in their equations Some essential ideas to remember would be eigen-pairs, determinants, finding inverses, solving linear ODE, integrating factors, and Exact ODE, etc.

Summary Those formulas are important to remember More importantly is to know why and how each equation works. Advancement in Math depends on knowledge of foundational Math classes Good luck and Have a great summer!
