CEO VP Finance VP Marketing CIO Portable and mobile Backbone Organization Home Internet connectivity

is a network of networks The Internet

LAN home or organization mobile user Internet service providers

Connectivity within and between networks The Internet How does the LAN connect to the Internet? How are the computers connected inside the LAN? LAN

mobile user Mobile connectivity How does the mobile user connect to the Internet? the Internet

Characteristics of a local area network 1.Proximity – usually confined to a small area like a house, office, building or campus 2.Ownership – the organization using the LAN typically owns and operates the equipment and communication links (the cables and radios) 3.Communication protocols – information is transmitted using data link layer protocols like Ethernet There are grey areas like a metropolitan area Ethernet

Point to point Point to muliti-point Mesh Ring Buss Network topologies

A few questions

We will consider four categories of connectivity. Without looking back, do you recall what they were? We also mentioned three characteristics of a local area network as opposed to a wide area network. Do you recall what they were?

Do cell phones use terrestrial or satellite connections? Which wireless technology is commonly used in homes? Can you think of a network that uses a one-many topology? Which topology does the Internet use? If you have a LAN at home, how many computers are connected to it? About how many computers are connected to our campus LAN? Do the computers on our campus LAN use wired or wireless technology?
