2 Internal Medicine/Pediatrics Match 2008/2009 Todd Alan Barrett –University of Kansas School of Medicine Kimberly Xiao-Xia Guo –University of Michigan Medical School Jennifer Anne McDonnell –University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine Elizabeth Renee Van Opstal –Michigan State University College of Human Medicine

3 Todd received his bachelor’s degree at University of Kansas in cell biology. At the University of Kansas Medical school, he was a Clendening Research Summer Fellow studying traditional Chinese medicine at Guang An Men Hospital and China Institute of Medicine. These experiences working in a medical cancer center in China fostered his interest in palliative care and alternative medicine. Todd also worked part-time as a Certified Pharmacy Technician performing chemotherapy admixture, inventory control, and research and developed an electronic database for patient medication information. Todd is interested in Peds Heme-oncology, transitional care, palliative care, and has a transferable grant on CF. He also owns his own photography business. 4 Kimberly was born in China, is a dancer, a violinist and has extensive volunteer and leadership experience. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Michigan with a degree in Biochemistry and Economics. She was a violinist in the Life Sciences Orchestra, a symphonic orchestra made up of musicians who are part of the Life Sciences Community at the University of Michigan. She is interested in ID/ HIV/ Underserved and international health. She received the Dean’s Merit Scholarship at University of Michigan (Full Tuition) Medical School. Kimberly has extensive research experience culminating in a publication on cell death and Parkinson’s Disease. She also is a marathon runner and is fluent in Mandarin Chinese and has a working knowledge of Spanish. Kimberly Xiao-Xia Guo University of Michigan Medical School

5 Jennifer received her undergraduate degree in biology and environmental studies at Bowdoin College in Maine. She entered the AmeriCorps (2002-2003), which included spending three months teaching at an environmental education day camp for children. Jennifer graduated AOA from Pritzker Medical School, also receiving the Gold Humanism Award. Jennifer served as the Co-Coordinator of the Maria Shelter for Women and Children, a free student-run clinic serving homeless women and their children. She is also an active volunteer for the Washington Park Free Children’s Health and for the Adolescent Substance Abuse Program (ASAP). Jennifer is also an avid runner, and enjoys hiking and backpacking. Jennifer McDonnell University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine

6 Elizabeth received her undergraduate degree in biopsychology from the University of Michigan Magna Cum Laude. She has extensive volunteer experience both in America and in Bolivia and was involved with research in medical school. She will graduate AOA from the Michigan State College of Medicine. There, she was actively involved in serving the medically underserved, as the Co-President of Community Medicine in Action. In this position, she coordinated other medical students in volunteering at Cristo Rey, a local community health center. Also she organized medical students in regional migrant health care clinics. She volunteered at Friendship Clinic, a student run clinic for the uninsured in Ingham County, and at a Salvation Army Clinic in Cochabamba, Bolivia. Elizabeth couples matched with her husband in Emergency Medicine. She is an avid runner and enjoys cooking and camping. Elizabeth Van Opstal Michigan State University College of Human Medicine
