2 Statement of Work Our team will model an existing X-ray source and develop an electrostatic lens in order to create a more controlled X-ray transmission and enable the coupling of a lens to the existing X-ray optics. If time allows, we will produce a 3D print prototype of the lens and housing. We will place this focusing lens between the electron multiplier and the electron target in the existing MXS.

3 Work Breakdown Structure 1 Background Research o 1.1 Going through the previous years’ documents o 1.2 Going thorough what Keith has for us o 1.3 Researching electron focusing systems o 1.4 Decide on a lens o 1.5 Look for other possible simulating tools o 1.6 Draft a list of requirements 2 Simulation o 2.1 Acquire Software o 2.2 Learn Simion software (ask Mark Somerville) o 2.3 Modeling and Testing Source/Validation o 2.4 Coding o 2.5 Optimization of Parameters 2.5.1 Size 2.5.2 Voltage for holding middle plate 2.5.3 Power usage 2.5.4 Focal Length (as small as possible) o 2.6 Validation ? 3 Design o 3.1 CAD o 3.2 Print o 3.3 Test 4 Documentation and Presentation o 4.1 – Website o 4.2 – Final Report o 4.3 – Midsummer Lunch Presentation o 4.4 – Final Presentation?

5 Our Questions Make us a name! o Choices: ElOpE, Electron Optics, EEL, Eeyore, EFL Do you really want us to use an Einzel Lens? Or could we look at other possible lenses? Would it be feasible for us to modify the electron multiplier at all? Would you recommend us looking at any other software packages for the sake of validation? (i.e. LENSYS) Website! Where is it? Should the lens be modifiable once it is optimized? (i.e. interface it with hardware or USB peripherals, changeable focal length, etc.) Should we look at changing any properties of the electron beam, i.e. accelerating it/changing the energy?
