1 STM Scanning Tunneling Microscope Scanning Without Touching (Activity) Developed by Malory M. Peterson, Summer 2006 Nanotechnology Grant National Science Foundation #0532516

2 What to do The Theremin was the first completely electronic instrument. Start by familiarizing yourself with the Theremin. Move the second plate closer and further from the first, and observe the pitch. Be careful to pay close attention to all the details of what is happening. Write your observation in the space provided.

3 Experiment One partner is chosen. The other lab members should close their eyes. The first partner will place the pie plates somewhere near each other. The other group members will estimate the distance between the plates and record their answers. (Fill in Table 1) The actual distance will then be measured. This will be repeated until each person has gone twice.

4 Questions As more trials were conduced, was it harder or easier to determine the distance between the two plates? Why?
