2 Introduction Hypothesis: –Alzheimer’s disease and related syndrome have heavy social and human consequences for the patient and his family Goal: –Asses the factors influencing the Quality of Life of principal caregivers of dementia Dementia: –the progressive decline in cognitive function due to damage or disease in the brain beyond what might be expected from normal aging

3 Study The study regrouped 100 caregivers –63 women 61.9 years old –37 men 72.2 years old

4 Independent and Dependent Variables The independent variables chosen were in relation with the patient’s and caregiver’s profile. –Sex –Presence of Depression (mini-GDS and ADL) –Type of dementia DSTA Mixed Dementia Lewy’s bodies The Dependent Variable is: –Quality of Life of the caregivers

5 Theoretical Construct Quality of life

6 Operational Definition The quality of life of the caregivers has been measure with Quality of Life Scale –Includes 20 items about several areas of the caregiver’s life –Divides into four main domains Behavioral capacities to face difficulties Relation with the environment Psychological perception of the situation Perception of possible distress The result of the Quality of Life is expressed in percentage; –O% = poor quality of life –100% = high quality of life

8 QoL and Gender Gender influence the QoL of caregivers. According to this research, women tend to have a lower QoL than men. AgeQoL Men72.257,4% ± 18,6 Women61.939,8% ± 18,3

9 QoL and Depression Out of 63 women 42 were depressive while only 7 men out of 37 were Depressive caregiver has a poor QoL QoL (p=0.001) Depressive caregiver 35,29% ± 15,2 Non- depressive caregiver 57,85% ± 18,4

10 QoL and Type of Dementia QoL is much more disturbed when caring for Lewy’s body dementia then for Alzheimer’s Disease QoL Lewy’s Bodies34,2% ± 12,3 Alzheimer Disease49,2% ± 20,1

11 Discussion It is interesting to see the different effects of certain factors on caregivers. The gender difference
