Supervisors: Includes faculty, TA’s and staff – Anyone acting in a supervisory capacity (formal or informal) Formulate safety rules Enforce safety rules Provide adequate training Inspect for hazards Promptly correct unsafe work practices Responsive to expressed safety concerns Report accidents/incidents

Consider the measures taken to minimize hazards! Report accidents, injury, unsafe conditions Use (and use properly) PPE

6 MTRL Safety Procedures for Undergrad Labs 1. Safety glasses Worn at all times in all labs Suitable type Provided by department 2. Labcoats Worn at all times in all labs Purchased by student

7 MTRL Safety Procedures for Undergrad Labs 3. No food or drink in labs 4. No open-toed shoes 5. No Bare legs 6. Long hair must be tied back 7. No earphones in use

9 MTRL Safety Procedures for Undergrad Labs Compliance Inform students during first class meeting Send out e-mails (Web CT) Post rules in lab/on lab doors, as appropriate Present specific rules as required in class List safety rules in the lab handouts Enforcement Spare safety glasses/labcoats can be provided (at supervisor discretion) Failure to comply: dismiss from lab period Marks penalty
