2. The beginning of prohibition: Prohibition was a national campaign to ban alcohol throughout the country. Supporters of prohibition were known as “dries”, most of them were women and christians who saw what damage alcohol did to family life. IT BECAME A LAW IN 1920 WHEN THE VOLSTEAD ACT WAS PASSED.

3. Successes and failures: Prohibition wasn’t successful, but was not a total failure neither. Levels of alcohol consumption fell by about 30 per cent with prohibition, and lots of illegal drunk sellers were caught. Prohibition led to massive corruption, made the police corrupt and the gangsters rich and powerful, too.

4. The Gangsters: The rise of the gangsters tells us a lot about American society in the 1920’s. The gangsters generally were immigrants from poorer backgrounds. They could Jewish, Polish, Irish and Italian. The gangs fought viciously with each other to control the liquor trade and also the prostitution.

5. The master of the Gangsters: Al Capone was the boss of the best power of the gangsters in Chicago. He ran a drinking club for his boss Johnny Torio. Later, he built up a huge network of corrupt officials among Chicago's police, local government workers, lawyers, prohibition agents and he even controlled Chicago’s mayor. Al Capone was a high-profile and popular figure in the murders, but his violent reign came to an end with the St. Valentine's day Massacre in 1929. He had never been caught until one day that was arrested because he had taxes debts.
