Technology Enhanced Learning Efficient Feedback in Sulis Facilitator: Angelica Risquez

Index  Challenges and ideas for providing FB: discussion  Five principles of effective feedback  Practical ideas  Tools in Sulis that integrate FB  Automated FB: Test and Quizzes  Not automated FB:  With small classes: Assignment tool, Discussion Forum and Forums  With large classes: Feedback tool  Integrating all your grades: Gradebook/Markbook

Challenges of providing FB  What challenges you encounter?  Mid term multiple choice with large class, how to do something else and provide FB to more than 400 students  Content of FB: positive FB and time consuming  Higher level thinking requires higher level questions that require time grading

Practical solutions What do you do/would like to do to provide better FB?  …

Five principles of effective FB Phil Race http://www.york.ac.uk/admin/aso/learningandteaching/id432_usi ng_feedback.pdf  Timely: ideally a day or two  Intimate and individual: in large classes, at least private  Empowering: careful with critical FB, remember balance of power  Feedback should open doors, not close them: mind adjectives (e.g. “weak”, “poor”, “excellent”)… use detail  Manageable: beware of too much FB for your workload and for students’ (important FB vs routine FB)

Tools in Sulis that integrate FB  Automated FB  Test and Quizzes (and the new Tasks, Tests and Surveys tool): automated FB and grading for correct/incorrect answers  Not automated (manual) FB  Assignments : lecturer can upload FB and grading  Discussion Forum and Forum : lecturer can grade individual posts  Feedback : lecturer upload Excel spreadsheet with qualitative or quantitative FB for the class, students get only their own FB  Gradebook/Markbook : amalgamates FB from all previous tools, and also external grades (e.g. class presentations, labs, paper exams, etc)

Tests and Quizzes Test and Quizzes handout, videos and FAQs in Sulis Support for Faculty site Sulis Support for Faculty

Assignments  Model answers before or after submission  Keep notes for yourself or to share with other lecturer/TA  All purpose items for general FB  Grading options :  Letter grades, points, checkmarks, pass/fail grades, ungraded, and assign a default grade to all students who have not received a grade  Students can access your comments as well as their grades.  Grade report : with all grades, downloadable to Excel.  You can share grading responsibilities with other lectures/TAs. You all can add feedback to the same student's work.  Grades are sent to Gradebook/Markbook Assignments handout, videos and FAQs in Sulis Support for Faculty siteSulis Support for Faculty

Discussion Forum  Grading by forum and topic: you may grade each student’s participation in discussions across all topics in a given forum or within a single topic. You may also leave comments, even when participation is not being graded.  Grades are sent to Gradebook/Markbook  Similar functionality in Forums tool Discussion Forum and Forums handout, videos and FAQs in Sulis Support for Faculty siteSulis Support for Faculty

Feedback tool  Instructor posts individual FB (grades and comments) to students in one step for the whole class  Possible uses:  Traditional FB on assignments or projects  FB to team members to track their progress toward goals.  General messages to targeted students, for example those who did not submit a project  Substitute of the Gradebook/Markbook tool, for students to see midterm or final grades Feedback handout, videos and FAQs in Sulis Support for Faculty siteSulis Support for Faculty

Gradebook/Markbook  Very powerful, but complex. Get some training/check handout before using!!!  Brings grades from Assignments, Discussion Forums, Forum, Test and Quizzes, and Task, Tests and Survey tools  You can also integrate “out of Sulis” grades such as presentations, labs, exams, etc.  Some features:  Auto-calculate overall module grades  Create categories so you can give assignments different grades.  Work with grades for a specific group in your class  Enter, view, edit, and release scores, comments, and grades to students.  Export/import scores and grades to/from Microsoft Excel in.csv format.  Give individual teaching assistants unique permissions within the Gradebook. 12 Questions?  Instructor guides for each tool available in Sulis Support for Faculty siteSulis Support for Faculty  Any questions to be logged by staff (not students) through Netdesk (http://inside/itdservicedesk)http://inside/itdservicedesk  CTL available for private consultations, tutorials, etc.
