Digital Repositories and Social Science Data: Supporting the Data Life Cycle IASSIST 2006 Panel Discussion Ann Green, Chair Ann Arbor May 24, 2006

The digital repository landscape: types of repositories ( generalized US-centric typology ) Institution-based digital repositories –Institutional Repositories Collect the intellectual output of an institution Usually text and images; eprints model Data libraries in single institutions Acquire and manage data to support the research and learning activities of the institution Topical data archives and government based data archives –CPANDA, American Religion Archive, NARA, etc. Domain-specific data archives –ICPSR, Roper Center, Odum Institute, Murray Center

Research and teaching Institution- based repositories Domain specific data repositories Topic focused and government based data repositories Web Resources Digital Repositories support the processes of research and teaching Simplified Content Flows

Discussion in two parts Digital repository landscape –What are the various types of digital repositories and what are their missions? Supporting social science research and the data life cycle –What stages of the data life cycle do the various types of repositories support? –What partnerships are possible among the repositories to support social science research?

Seeking partnerships in the repository landscape To support research To support the data life cycle Could an institutional repository act as an entry point for redistributing data to domain specific repositories? Could an institutional repository participate with domain repositories in a search and discovery infrastructure?

Seeking partnerships in the repository landscape Could an institutional repository act as a disseminator of best practices developed by domain repositories? Could an institutional repository act as a partner in developing channels between researchers and domain specific repositories?
