Preparing & Delivering Lectures Trevor Gibbs

Moving from teaching to learning & applying the principles of adult education

Lecture: a reading to read

Lectures are ( in general ) : the most common form of teaching a recognised, tried and tested way of teaching effective for teaching purposeful for teaching liked by teachers & students

Lectures are good / effective for teaching and giving information but: -- do they deliver the goods ? -- do we know what, if any, learning has occurred ?

Can we apply the principles of Adult Education to our lectures to maximise the learning opportunity ? Yes-- but only if they ….. … are used appropriately … are structured … recognise learner needs and abilities … stimulate further learning

… used appropriately:. giving & sharing information, thoughts and ideas. based upon learners’ needs not lecturer’s wants. 3 / 5 points of information rule. recognise mainly one way and passive. resourced effectively. recognise audience size & participation

… structured:. who, why, how & what happens next. introduction. why do it; objective, context. how; structure & content. what will be the result / what are you expecting. time. length. time of day, before & after

… recognise learner needs and abilities:. know who the learners are. know at what stage of learning they are at. know what they need to know. find out what they know

… stimulate further learning:. act as a facilitator of learning. you do not have to tell them all you know. you do not have to tell them everything they need to know. create opportunity for personal learning. create ways to stimulate personal learning

… and remember:. “ ice breaker ”. audience participation. “ don’t be too clever ”. resources, handouts, & reading material

REFLECT: What was my last lecture like ? Did I use any of the techniques just described ? If not - then why not ? If yes – which ones and were they effective and how ?
