M. S. Tillack, Y. Tao, F. Najmabadi Proposed contributions to Jupiter-III by the laser-matter interactions group Briefing to Prof. Yoshio Ueda 20 November 2006 San Diego, CA

1.Ablation plume dynamics Particle acceleration, internal structure of plumes, phase change physics 2.Applications of short-pulse lasers in surface-heating experiments Metal mirrors, IFE chamber armor 3.EUV lithography 13.5-nm light emission, plume transport Our group has 10 years of experience studying laser heating and ablation 2 of 9

These skills can accelerate the fielding of experiments and diagnostics in PISCES 3 of 9 1.Applications of short-pulse lasers for heating and ablation experiments 2.Laser blow-off impurity injection diagnostic 3.Time-resolved SXR imaging Three contributions are proposed:

Laser heating and ablation experiments performed with Nd:YAG and excimer lasers 4 of 9 Time (10 -7 s) T melt HAPL optics (10 8 W/cm 2 ) HAPL armor (10 9 W/cm 2 ) Ablation physics (10 10 –10 11 W/cm 2 ) IFE EUVL

We are studying laser blow-off as a diagnostic technique for MFE plasmas 5 of 9 Interferometry Shadowgraphy Fast (2 ns) visible imaging Time and space resolved spectroscopy Witness plates

Thin films were fabricated and accelerated by back-side illumination 6 of 9 400 mm 40 mm 10 mm Film material:Ni Film thickness:700 nm Substrate:1 mm glass Wavelength: 1.064  m Pulse duration: 7 ns Laser Energy: 500 mJ Intensity: 1 GW/cm 2 200 mm 1 mm

Studies were performed on the ejecta velocity and structure vs. composition, thickness, intensity 7 of 9 100 ns500 ns800 ns Visible emission Shadow graphy

Confinement of ejecta and avoidance of ionization are important to penetrate the plasma and retain spatial resolution 8 of 9 Visible emission @500 ns FWHM=1 mm V=3 km/s Emission and witness plate shows plume is mostly neutral 10  m

Soft x-ray imaging can be used together with blowoff to study transport physics 9 of 9 Stutman et al., RSI 77, 330 2006. We can add time-resolved 2D imaging at low cost Y. Tao et al., RSI 75, 5173 (2004). Y. Tao et al., APL 85, 1919 (2004). We use a similar diagnostic for EUVL research JenOptik E-mon
