1 Writing Workshop for TPEs What do Real Writers Do? PowerPoint by Pat Stall, CSUSM

2 Writing Process for TPE Prewriting: Read text of the TPE silently, highlighting, underlining key words and phrases

3 Review your highlighting. Put a star beside the items you think are most important for you to remember and to employ in your own teaching and philosophy.

4 Oral Prewriting 2 min. think-pair-share Without looking back at the TPE text, explain to your partner how you “understand” the TPE. Summarize the key components for you, as a teacher.

5 Drafting 9 min. quick write Create a New Word Document While the conversation is “fresh on your mind,” write a summary of the TPE. Use first person language. (4 min.) Now, look at the text of the TPE and see if you want to add anything else to clarify your summary. (4 min.)

6 Identify Evidence In this same paragraph identify the piece(s) of evidence you will be uploading for this TPE. Make sure you are consistent with the names of the evidence in the narrative response. Use the same name(s) you give when you upload the evidence.

7 Revising Read your paragraph out loud to your partner. What does “reading aloud” do to help you revise? Do a spell and grammar check on your paragraph. Revise your paragraph as needed.

8 2 nd paragraph, TPE response Think about the attachment evidence. How does that help you to understand the TPE? What specific components of your attachment provide evidence of your understanding of the TPE as it is summarized in the first paragraph? 2 min. pair share

9 Drafting While the conversation is “fresh on your mind,” write a paragraph explaining how your attachment demonstrates your understanding of the TPE. (8 min.) Use some language and points from your first paragraph.

10 Revising Reread your entire response (both paragraphs) aloud to your partner. Listen for flow, continuity, etc. Respond to your partner with a comment on each of the following: PraiseQuestionPolish Do a spell and grammar check. Revise your paragraph as needed.

11 Reflection paragraph Write a concluding paragraph that reflects upon and summarizes the significance of your learning with regards to the TPE. How will this learning prepare you to be an effective teacher? What do you still need to learn?

12 Revise again Good writers do multiple drafts. Reread your entire response (all 3 paragraphs) aloud to your partner. Listen for flow, continuity, etc. Respond to your partner with a comment on each of the following: PraiseQuestionPolish Do a spell and grammar check. Revise your paragraph as needed.

13 Upload your TPE Response. Copy the complete TPE response in the word document Open your TaskSteam account Go to “View My Work” Click on “CSUSM Single Subject Portfolio” - this should take you to “#3 Edit Content” Go to the TPE number you are working on Go to “Add/Edit” Go to Text Paste your complete TPE response into the text box Check for completeness

14 Upload Evidence Go to the “Attachment” section 1. Name File - Type in the title of the evidence(s). Use the same name(s) you gave within your response paragraphs. Capitalize as a title. 2. Select File - Choose file from your computer, flash drive, or cd. 3. Describe File - Write a 1-2 sentence(s) describing your evidence(s). 4. Standards - Choose the standards that your evidence addresses. (Optional - check with your instructor) Proof your attachment information and “Add File”

15 Publishing TPE Go to “#4 Publish/Share with Reviewer” Click on “Request Feedback” Click on “Entire Folio” & Continue Select the professor you are submitting TPE into. Click on “Share with Reviewer” Yeah you just posted your TPE on TaskStream!!!

16 Writing Process Keep in mind that the writing process takes time. It will take longer for your students. Build in time and support for your student to write. And remember letting a paper “stew” overnight or for a period of days help the revision process.
