5 Syllabus and Class Structure  Reading and Case Material  Russo- Environmental Management: Readings and Cases  Reading Packets in Bookstore. –HBS cases, WRI case, 6-7 HBR readings  Reserve readings.  Principles of Environmental Management (2 nd Edition): Buchholz;  Web site readings

6 Syllabus and Class Structure  Objective –To look at the various issues facing Organizations and the Natural Environment –Learn how organizations have met some of these challenges…and better ways of meeting them. –Techniques for carrying out organizational environmental investigations. –Make you aware and whet your appetite for addressing these issues.

7 Syllabus and Class Structure  Grading and Assignments –2 Team Case Write-ups- 30% –1 Team Company Evaluation- 30% (20% for Grad. Students) –Individual Assignment Questions and Case Executive Summaries - 20% –Class Preparation and Participation - 20% –Graduate Research Paper – 10% for Grad Students  Attendance in Class is required – Absences will be detrimental to your standing in this class.

8 Syllabus and Class Structure  Teams and Team Projects –Group Work is large percentage of grade –Select by Second Class hand in sheet with names. –Would like have about 5 students per group (2 grad students per group). –Leftovers assigned by me. –End of Semester...there are peer evaluations.

9 Syllabus and Class Structure  Cases –Help to learn from each other and “real” world –Expect that you be prepared each week to discuss case –Random calls will be made –Be considerate to your fellow students (especially when you strongly disagree) –Try to discuss cases as a group outside of class (not just for assigned case write-ups).

10 Syllabus and Class Structure  Case Write-ups –Need to hand in a 1-2 page individual executive summary of your case analysis for every class with case –Have a how to do cases reading for OM case analysis. –Size of full case writeup should be (at most) 8 single spaced pages and any appendices, no exec summary due if your group has case assigned for week. –To help in your case writeups and discussion I will provide you with some leading questions (will post on website)

11 Syllabus and Class Structure  Case Write-ups –A typical case write-up should include: a) Identify the key issues for management in the case. b) Identify the key environmental issues in the case. c) Prepare an evaluation of the alternatives available to management. d) Suggest a plan of action for management including details on how to implement the plan and weaknesses of plan clearly pointed out. e) Provide a backup plans.

12 Syllabus and Class Structure  Case Presentations –For those assigned with the days detailed case a case presentation is required. –Presentation should not last more than 20 minutes (keep it to less than 10 transparencies). –If two teams are making presentations, 15 minute time limits. –15 minute Q&A period –Then class discussion

13 Syllabus and Class Structure  Participation –You need to show up for class –You should be involved in discussion, this is an important way to learn –Talking for the sake of talking without much contribution to the case is not a good way to get participation credit –Insightful comments are encourage. –HANDOUT ON SOME PARTICIPATION GUIDELINES

14 Syllabus and Course Structure  Company Evaluation –On the final day of class  10-20 page report on a company environmental evaluation.  presentation on your findings/recommendations –Need to contact companies –Write letter for permission/introduction –Do a little research on Company –Tour Company/Interview People –Write thank you letter –Be prepared call back for more info if needed. –I’ll be your consultant

15 Syllabus and Course Structure  Company Evaluation –See NCMS AEE performance measurement device to help guide you in development of questions. Handbook will be on reserve for you. –Having questions developed beforehand with an outline of your report may be beneficial in making your time at the company efficient and effective.

16 Syllabus and Course Structure  Individual Assignments and Executive Summaries –many classes will have an assignment question  Type up an answer to this assignment question in detail (1-2 pages).  S/U grading will be given. –For days with cases due  students need to hand in “executive summary” of case  exec summary should include: –a brief synopsis of the case, –the major issues involved, –and your recommendations.  All Assignments and Exec Summaries are due at beginning of class! PLEASE EMAIL IF YOU CAN

17 Graduate Student Research Paper  Select a topic related to this Class (i.e. Corporate Environmental Management).  May be something related to other classes.  Grade based on meeting deadlines and quality of final paper.  Stages of development will include deadlines.  Possible outline presented in syllabus.
