Ohio Lyrics Brittnae’ Jacobs August 30,2010 Stratton 3 rd block

First Stanza Tin soldiers and Nixon comin’. We’re finally on our own. This summer I hear the drummin. Four dead in ohio. Who’s speaker: 2 young men Who’s audience: The soldiers and people of the country they are trying to work with to keep the country safe Tone: Anxious, from the using of “we’re finally on our own” and “this summer I hear the drummin”. Saying tin soldiers and Nixon's coming” also expresses how bad the land of Ohio has gotten, showing the killing of these people as a war beginning

Second Stanza Gotta get down to it. Soldiers are gunning us down. Should have been done long ago. What if you knew her and Found her dead on the ground? How can you run when you know The beginning of this stanza shows the purpose appearing for this poem when they state, “gotta get down to it”. This lets us know that this poem has to deal with these men wanting to change things that are being done in their country or rather city of Ohio. When saying soldiers are gunning us down, this means that there is so much violence being down with killings of our own people its unbearable. So they ask these people doing the killings that what if you saw someone you loved and cared about dead on the ground. You could not keep that a secret. You would want it addressed as quickly as possible.

Third Stanza Na, Na, Na, Na, Shift: From angry to a since of cheerfulness that things were possibly going to be done about their country. A war was being put into process. Repetition: Of Na’s

Fourth Stanza Gotta get down to it Soldiers are cutting us down Should have been long ago What if you knew her and Found her dead on the ground? How can you run when you know? Once again the purpose is being brought back in to play when they state, “Gotta get down to it”, letting you know that they are being serious when they convey that something needs to be done about the killings in their country. Soldiers need to be a more active force. This time though instead of saying “ Solldiers gunning us down”, they say “soldiers cutting us down” letting us know that these killings are becoming worse and there will be action taking force.

Fifth Stanza Tin soldiers and Nixon comin We’re finally on our own This summer I hear the drummin Four dead in Ohio Repetition of what is happening in the country is being announced again. This conveys that they are finally able to defend their country This repetition of the “ four dead in Ohio” shows the tone as shocked because of this many deaths placed. While also showing anger for this many deaths showing anger for this many deaths, which is why they continuously say this sentence.

Transition The transitioning of trying to let the soldiers of the country know about the problems to trying to actually join the force in starting to protect it.
