Atmospheric, Oceanic & Planetary Physics, University of Oxford A Dudhia MIPAS QWG16 Venice 22-23 Apr 2008 Page 9 Winter 2007/2008 Conclusions  No obvious problems with MIPAS retrievals  Dynamically: series of major stratospheric warmings during Jan/Feb (including 40K in 4 days Jan 19-23) but quiet since March  Chemically: fairly ‘standard’ winter

Atmospheric, Oceanic & Planetary Physics, University of Oxford A Dudhia MIPAS QWG16 Venice 22-23 Apr 2008 Page 10 Comparison of NRT and “Off-Line’’ Data  Identical OXF L2 processing used for both  Since NRT data started on 19 Feb 08 and latest OFL data completed for 24 Feb 08, only 6 days overlap so far

Atmospheric, Oceanic & Planetary Physics, University of Oxford A Dudhia MIPAS QWG16 Venice 22-23 Apr 2008 Page 11 L1B NRT Data  Produced since 19 Feb 08  Usually available within a couple of hours of acquisition from Kiruna (8/9 orbits) or ESRIN (5/6 orbits) ftp sites  Deleted approximately 10 days after acquisition  Some disruption in flow during ATV mission but basically robust

Atmospheric, Oceanic & Planetary Physics, University of Oxford A Dudhia MIPAS QWG16 Venice 22-23 Apr 2008 Page 12 L1B NRT Data Anomalies  Frequent duplicate orbits from ESRIN (but not Kiruna)  One second time difference compared with OFL data (OFL sweep 1.000010 seconds later than NRT)  Occasionally NUM_SWEEPS_PER_SCAN=+00028 (instead of expected value +00027)  Know bug - should be fixed with IPF 5.00  All AB band spectra flagged as corrupt in one orbit (31912, 7Apr08)  Missing update of MIP_CO1 auxiliary file

Atmospheric, Oceanic & Planetary Physics, University of Oxford A Dudhia MIPAS QWG16 Venice 22-23 Apr 2008 Page 20 NRT Data - Conclusions  L1B NRT data production generally robust  Spectral shift is main distinction between NRT and OFL L1B Data  No significant bias in L2 data, but scatter ~noise random error from spectral shift.
