3 Families are important teachers  “Since I don’t know how to teach science, English or algebra, I can’t help my child with schoolwork.”  Understand how your child learns  Understand where you as parents fit in to learning

4 Parents’ Relationship with Education  We limit our growth with thoughts such as this:  “I’m not good at this”  “I’m too old to start learning that”  “I’ll embarrass myself if I try” “If we are to play a larger role in our children’s learning, then we need to reconsider our own relationship to education.” John Dewey, Democracy and Education, 1916

5 Creating an Environment for Learning  Providing time and a quiet place to study  Assigning household chores  Being firm about times to get up and go to bed  Having Dinner together  Set limits on TV watching  Checking up on your children when you are not able to be home  Arrange for afterschool activities

6 Adolescents and Learning  Many children believe learning is memorizing.  Students must learn how to learn  Learning is a process that begins with a question or problem
