Goal Sharing Team Training Statistical Thinking and Data Analysis (III) Peter Ping Liu, Ph D, PE, CQE, OCP and CSIT Professor and Coordinator of Graduate Programs School of Technology Eastern Illinois University Charleston, IL 61920

Numerical Representation of Data Using more efficient ways to communicate.

Central tendency = average It represents the most probable prediction for the process/population. It defines the location of data distribution.

Statistical thinking VIII The average represents the most probable outcome. (Win your guess)

Variation Data spread (dispersion/variability) can be expressed by either range or standard deviation.

Statistical thinking IX Large variation (range or standard deviation) means less consistency in the process. In order to achieve high consistency in quality of service, our job is therefore to reduce range or standard deviation.

Simple tool: Use your pocket calculator to do some handy analysis.

Application examples by participants or projects by performance improvement teams.
