Summary of workshop on AR8210 - May 1 1998 One of the MURI candidate active regions selected for detailed study and modeling

Presentations Analysis of vector magnetogram data, construction of force-free fields for initial conditions (Stephane Regnier) Determining boundary velocities – detailed discussions of LCT, MEF methods (Stephane Regnier, Brian Welsch, George Fisher) Driving an MHD simulation of AR8210 with a time sequence of vector magnetogram data (Abbett) Context information about AR8210 (Yan Li, Hugh Hudson, Janet Luhmann

AR8210 The initial atmosphere must be specified 1. Potential field extrapolation 2. Force-free model Initial dynamic run --- uses MEF method at the photospheric boundary with an initial FFF atmosphere provided by S. Regnier:

MEF method (D. Longcope)

Toward comparison with observational data --- Calculating temperatures and emissivities a posteriori along model coronal loops (L. Lundquist) Yohkoh SXT 01 May 1998 14:01 17:57 21:12 19:40

needed for further AR8210 work: Extend AR8210 work to incorporate a larger part of the Sun Need better velocity determination Resolve MHD modeling issues

Extend AR8210 work to incorporate a larger part of the Sun  Yang Liu – Global FFF (nonlinear) model out to 2.5 R s (coarse resolution: 1  x1  resolution) [whole Sun] Regnier – Extend box to include 0 J z outside IVM FOV but inside MDI FOV. [bigger box] Explore observed dynamic connections between AR 8210 and AR 8214(?) during the time around May 1 1998.

Need better velocity determination o Better observations of horizontal and vertical flow morphology in eruptive magnetic configurations o Develop new ideas/algorithms for measuring/determining velocities for use in modeling real data o Better understanding and characterization of LCT, MEF methods o Survey of past efforts at imposing flows in other models

MHD modeling issues How to deal with high Mach number downflows How to deal with high V A and small time steps How to deal with real versus diffusive time scales Energy equation cheats to get reasonable pressure and velocity patterns from flux emergence
