Method (s) Used to Analyze The Question Analysis of Americans' sociopolitical values and their relationship to support for a wide variety of social welfare programs.

Data Computer-assisted telephone interviews. Specifically, respondents were asked not only about their preferred spending levels for social programs, but also about the structure that these programs should take (for instance, whether a redistributive element should enter the policy). Finally, they asked about the scope of government responsibilities.

Results Focus on the orientation of humanitarianism. Argue that humanitarianism provides a better explanation for public opinion toward welfare in the United States than egalitarianism.

Policy Implications “We have explored the implications of humanitarianism for public welfare support and have contrasted this with egalitarianism. We have identified humanitarianism as a prosocial orientation and egalitarianism as a norm and have discussed the differences between these two concepts. By making this distinction, one contribution of this article is to refine our understanding of sociopolitical values.”
