1.Describe in detail what you see (make observations). 2.What questions would you as a biologist ask after seeing the mold?

The Word Theory What is a theory? - Describe it in your own words and give an example.

Theory: General Usage In general usage, the word theory takes on a very different meaning then it does when it is used in science. In general usage a synonym for theory could be speculation, or assumption People only also use the word theory when they are really talking about a hypothesis Example: I have a theory about why the computer isn’t turning on.

Theory: Scientific Meaning This understanding of the word can lead to misconceptions about scientific concepts when the word is used scientifically; they will sometimes say, “That is just a theory,” thinking that a certain concept is not supported by evidence In, science the word theory applies to a well- tested explanation that unifies a broad range of observations → Example: Evolutionary Theory is immensely important to biology

Section 1-3: Studying Life Biology is the study of life  It is an exciting time in biology → Living organisms are being cloned and genetically engineered; advances in medicine; biotechnology could possibly bring back extinct organisms

The Diversity of Life  What are some examples of living organisms?  What do these organisms have in common that distinguish them as living organisms?

The Characteristics of Life Living things are made up of units called cells Living things reproduce Living things are based on a universal genetic code Living things grow and develop

The Characteristics of Life Living things obtain and use materials and energy Living things respond to their environment Living things maintain a stable internal environment (homeostasis) Taken as a group, living things change over time (evolution)

Characteristics of Life  Compare the salamander and black bear on page 17 of your textbook.  How are they similar and how are they different?

Characteristics of Life Similar Both exhibit all of the characteristics of life Both are animals Different Different in size, shape, structure Live in different habitats Different behaviors

Big Ideas In Science Science as a way of knowing Matter and Energy Information and Heredity Evolution Homeostasis Structure and Function Interdependence of Nature Cellular Basis of Life Unity and Diversity of Life Science, Technology, and Society

Levels of Organization (Fig. 1-19) Some of the levels at which life can be studied include:  Molecules  Cells  Organisms  Populations of a single kind of organism  Communities of different organisms in an area  The Biosphere
