UCLC Meeting UCLC Raison d’etre Steps to proposal (Oct 15 submission) Plans for Today Ritchie Patterson June 30, 2002

Wherefore UCLC? LRP recommends LC as next facility Need for university involvement in LC R&D Need for coherent coupling among community efforts and agencies UCLC was created to help meet these needs by providing a vehicle for NSF support to LC- interested universities

UCLC Introduction First meeting on April 19th. Heard from experts in the detector and accelerator re status and further R&D needs. Coordinators and working groups were set-up and discussion begun. Roughly 20 projects are now taking shape, with initial project descriptions in hand from many of them. “Final” proposal items will be influenced by guidance from the USLCSC, expert review panels and budget realities. Goal is proposal submission by October 15.

Proposal Features Limited resources and time so… focus on NLC/TESLA generation of LC (Review Panels will advise) 3 year program envisioned (could be discussed) with funding growing with time (problem will be to get support for personnel). Intention is to design a dynamic structure so that interested parties can join anytime during the duration of the proposal. Budget estimate Year 1 ≤ 1M$ Year 2 ≤ 2M$ Year 3 ≤ 3M$

Timeline

Milestones - I July 20 - Draft Project Descriptions and cost estimates due (submit to coordinators) August 1 - Project Descriptions and cost estimates posted on the web. PD’s from other consortia will also be posted that day. August - Compile Project Descriptions Coordinators work with Project Manager to form the complete set of project descriptions and cost estimates consistent with budget realities. Coordinate projects across consortia.

Milestones - II Sept 6 - Project Descriptions submitted to Steering Group review panel. Other consortia will submit on the same date. Sept 9 - Paragraph describing Outreach plans due (see talk by J. Rogers) Sept 13 - Receive panel reviews Mid-Sept - Finalize projects and budgets (see talk by M. Tigner)

Milestones - III Mid-Sept to mid-Oct - Write proposal and supporting documents Proposal is 15 page “Fastlane” version of proposed program together with preliminary sub-contract documents. Each institution must submit an Outreach Plan. Supporting documents include… Combined Project Descriptions “LC Detector R&D” by J. Brau et al We should offer our comments on the draft now Accelerator supporting document Other?? Oct 15 - Submit proposal

More on Project Descriptions Content Project Name Institution(s) & personnel Research plan (3 yr) 1 to 5 pages Should include “measureables” Budget (3 yr) Tex preferred, but anything (MS Word, ASCII) will do Format of Project Descriptions is common for all consortia
