Managing Team Problems Level 1: Individual level– individual behavior that does not contribute to task/social functioning, distracts or diverts team from its goals, serves the individual more than the team, etc. Level 2: Team level– interaction is diverted from balanced relationship building toward task accomplishment, lack of productivity, confusion, low participation, conflict, subgrouping, etc. Level 3: Organizational level– organization fails to legitimize a team or its efforts, provide resources, unrealistic expectations, poor composition, etc.

Roles can be over- or under-used

Bale’s Team Roles

Steps in problem behavior management (truncate as needed) 1.Implicit sanction: nonverbal disapproval of behavior (e.g., the “look”) 2.Explicit acknowledgement: describe and disapprove behavior (e.g., you’re late to the meeting and we need to start on time”) 3.Confrontation and support: Identify pattern of behavior, its consequences, and plan for change (e.g., you’ve been late several meetings and it delays all of our work. What prevents you from being here on time, and what can we do to help out?”) 4.Ultimatum and facilitation: Limit setting and consequences (e.g., you are continuing to attend late and it interferes with our task. You’ll need to be here or drop off the team”) 5.Termination: “Your absenteeism has continued to be a problem and we cannot afford to continue you as a team member”

What are behaviors that team members engage in that are problematic? What are your hypotheses about why they are engaging in such behaviors? How can such behaviors be dealt with? e.g. withdrawal & nonparticipation Disinterest Feel intimidated Lack preparation Irrelevant Irritated Preoccupied Introverted Disinterest –Check personal & team goal congruence –Check task assignment relevance –Check skill level –Discuss barriers –Find interesting subtask List other problem behaviors Generate 3 hypotheses for each Brainstorm five ways to deal with one of the hypothesses Individual Behavior Intervention Plan

Team behavior Intervention Plan What does it mean to have a “dysfunctional” team? What are indications that a team is becoming dysfunctional? What are your hypotheses? Interventions?

Reflective Process in intervening in Problem Team Dynamics 1.Acknowledge & describe the team behavior observed, and how it seems to impact team functioning 2.Explore what it reflects about the team dynamics 3.Explore on what needs to be changed and how to do it
