1 SG Det IA 2007 oct29 Alain Blondel ECFA study groups BENE (in CARE) Int'l Scoping Study (ISS) Steering group (EU): A.Blondel (Geneva) P.Soler (Glasgow) A.Cervera (Valencia) A.Rubbia (ETHZurich) JE.Campagne (Orsay) E. Radicioni (Bari) V. Palladino (BENE)

2 SG Det IA 2007 oct29 Alain Blondel JRA Work packages -- Test beam infrastructure (Radicioni) DEFINITELY– Work on-going -- Photon detectors (near and far detectors) (Soler, Cervera) -- Cryogenic (liquid argon) detector studies (Rubbia) BOTH POSSIBLE SYNERGIES WITH CALORIMETERS FOR LHC/ILC -- Silicon detectors for near detectors (Soler) HERE POSSIBLE SYNERGIES WITH Si Trackers -- Very large magnet development (NN) ??? Networking activities: (Cervera) (two NA, management, and:) -- putting it all together, coordination of test beam, web master, etc.. -- common simulation and performance and cost evaluation framework work towards forming a community consensus -- conception of hybrid detectors and combined test beam measurements -- link to industrial partners and other fields using similar detectors (LHC/LC) Transnational access (one) -- access to test beam facilities

3 SG Det IA 2007 oct29 Alain Blondel Infrastructure for test beam (Emilio Radicioni) test beam (CERN, perhaps RAL MICE beam for <400 MeV/C beams) needs a large magnet i.e. H8 magnet or similar size/field DAQ, trigger, electronics, data storage hadron, muon and electron beams in energy range of oscillating neutrinos (0.5 to <~10 GeV) beam PID and spectrometer very different than LHC detector development challenges: high number of channels, cost per channel, mip availability: a few months per year Investigation through community going on

4 SG Det IA 2007 oct29 Alain Blondel Emilio Radicioni's request.... BEAM 1- beam particle type with their respective energy range and intensities. 2- beam size and steering range (angle, position) 3- Desired collected statistics DETECTOR AREA 1- needed size 2- weight (for crane size) 3- max size of prototypes in magnetic field 4- max B field 6- need moving/rotating platforms ? 7- time likely needed to move/install/deinstall/remove the prototype from the experimental area 8- kind of triggers (beam, cosmics,...) and area/size to be covered by trigger devices 9- required precision of alignements and geometrical measurements ELECTRONICS/COUNTING ROOM/SUPPORT BARRACKS 1- Kind of information to be read out (charge, timining,...) 2- Likely number of readout channels 4- Needs for environmental monitoring and detector control (temperatures, voltages, currents, humidity, gas contamination,...) 5- small workshop for quick electronics and mechanics fixes and modifications? INFRASTRUCTURES 1- which gasses and gas mixtures? (cryo and normal temp) 2- Typical high-voltage and low-voltage values
